About this listen

Frederick Forsyth has seen it all. And lived to tell the tale.

We all make mistakes, but starting the Third World War would have been a rather large one. To this day I still maintain it was not entirely my fault. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

During the course of my life, I've barely escaped the wrath of an arms dealer in Hamburg, been strafed by a MiG during the Nigerian civil war, and landed during a bloody coup in Guinea-Bissau.

The Stasi arrested me, the Israelis regaled me, the IRA prompted a quick move from Ireland to England, and a certain attractive Czech secret police agent - well, her actions were a bit more intimate. And that's just for starters. All of that I saw from the inside. But all that time I was, nonetheless, an outsider.

Trained first as a pilot then as a journalist, Frederick Forsyth finally turned to fiction and became one of the most lauded thriller writers of our time.

As exciting as his novels, Forsyth's autobiography is a candid look at an extraordinary life lived to the full - a life whose unique experiences have provided rich inspiration for 13 internationally best-selling thrillers.

How disappointing. It’s finished.
One of the best books I’ve enjoyed for over 60 years, the narration equally fabulous. A perfect team, relating a life well observed and lived.
I don’t normally read fiction, but this book has inspired me to read more by this author, it’s that good. Need I say more.

How disappointing………

Would you listen to The Outsider again? Why?

Yes I would read it again because it is like a Novel ! What an amazing life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Outsider?

I particularly like the chapter about Forsyth's early career as journalist and the steps of his first 3 books. Very insightful and shows how real and documented are the book events !

What about Robert Powell’s performance did you like?

The way he speaks as if Forsyth was speaking to our ears...

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Live your life like a novel !

Any additional comments?

I decided to re-read the full Forsyth book list after finishing this autobiography !

The back story of the stories that I loved so much

I’ve listened to and enjoyed many of Frederick Forsyth’s novels: all characterised by exciting themes given veracity by the author’s great attention to detail. What I didn’t know was that many of his exciting story-lines are based on experiences he was actually involved in. This is certainly the most-action packed biography I've ever encountered. If this autobiography had been a novel I might have thought one life could not actually have so many over-the-top experiences and repeatedly defy death. It's like a cross between James Bond and Indiana Jones! It certainly makes for an enthralling listen as the content is extraordinary, the writing well-suited to audio and the narrator is excellent.

An amazing life described with verve

Very enlightening book revealing that the BBC cannot be trusted to provide unbiased factual news but will rather present propaganda as early as the 60’s to the present day. Why the nation tolerates this organisation. Many are now boycotting the BBC quite rightly

The BBC has always been the propaganda are of the establishment

For anyone interested in reading any of the Frederick Forsyth books this is an excellent introduction to the man, the writer and his life. I have already read and or listened to his stories and now having finished The Outsider, I will revisit and read or listen to them again with renewed interest and enthusiasm. The narration byRobert Powell adds to the story and creates the perfect pitch as if one is having a personal talk with Forsyth himself, without doubt an excellent portrayal of one of the most informed writers of our time.
