About this listen

Arthur and Jake are the sons of a farmer in the mid-1930s, when life is tough and another world war is looming. Arthur is solid and dutiful, set to inherit the farm and his father's character; Jake is younger, attractive, mercurial and dangerous to know. A young woman, Laura, comes into the community and tips the fragile balance of sibling rivalry over the edge... And then there is Ian, son of the local doctor, thoughtful, idealistic, and far too sure that he knows the difference between right and wrong. By now it is the 50s, and the world has changed - a little, but not enough...©2006 Mary Lawson (P)2008 Recorded Books LLC Contemporary Contemporary Romance Family Life Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Romance Heartfelt

Mary Lawson’s characters are so well depicted that one feels like they are friends or in some cases enemies. One can suffer and elate with them and the nuance of emotions is superb. Overall a wonderful and immersive read!

I started reading Mary Lawson as I read a review comparing her to Ann Tyler whose books I enjoy very much. The review was about A Town Called Solace (her most recent - also on Audible) which I loved, so went straight on to The Other Side of the Bridge. It builds, very slowly at first, into a fascinating analysis of sibling rivalry and the effects on a small isolated town of the Second World War. Very powerful. Would love to hear her other books on Audible like Crow Lake.

Slow burner but worth it.

This was a really good story and we'll narrated but really spoiled by the fact that the chapter markers on audible were incorrect. The story unfolds by moving back and forth in time making it even more important that you know when the narrative shifts are going to come. The lack of accurate chapters markers made it really difficult to pace my listening and I kept having to leave the story at key moments when ordinarily I would have known whether I had time to listen to the end of a chapter.

Inaccurate chapter markers!

I loved this as much as all Mary Lawson's others and was sorry when it ended. Delightful characterisation, descriptions of small town life and relationships within a family.

Another wonderful Mary Lawson book

This is a beautifully written story with a wonderful sense of place. The description of farming life in northern Canada is vivid and engaging as the backdrop to the narrative around the brothers. The characters come alive and the story holds your attention to the last word. A great read.

Astonishing book. Assured, fascinating characters and narrative. After I finished it I would find myself thinking of little morsels of description days later. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
