About this listen

The Odyssey is literature's grandest evocation of every man's journey through life. In the myths and legends that are retold here, the energy and poetry of Homer's original is captured in a bold, contemporary idiom, giving us an edition of The Odyssey that is a joy to listen to, worth savoring and treasuring for its sheer lyrical mastery.

This audiobook is sure to delight both the classicist and the general listener and to captivate a new generation of Homer's students.

Critic reviews

1997, Audie Awards, Winner

"It's a deeply satisfying experience to listen to McKellen's subtle, resonant voice weave the story. Cherish the images as the web of this great tale is woven before the eyes of the mind." (AudioFile)

"To re-create a world where everything is living...is very nearly as difficult as to create it. Fagles does this with triumphant assurance; every arrowhead flashes lightning, every bush burns; Homer is with us." (James Dickey)

Ian mcellen's performance is great. I wish he would re-tell it with his old age voice.

I much prefer science fiction, but this was a fun detour. It was very interesting to see how well formed it is a as novel. Given it is an epic, be prepared for the repetition and phrasing. After a while that almost become comforting. The story line is well known so not much of a surprise, but the detail is very interesting and does give a glimpse to the real world back then. Interesting, educational and also fun.

A classic. (grin), but worth the listen.

I know it’s one of the classics, but I found it very well read by Ian Mckellen a rich and rounded voice but the story just wasn’t for me at all.

Not my cup’o’tea!

An epic saga masterfully told. Unforgettable characters and a story that is as visceral and vivid today as it was when it was first told

Mindblowingly vivid epic storytelling

Loved every minute of it. Takes a bit of time to adjust to the style of English and language but soon is natural and the story is top class. Ian McKellens voice is perfect for this epic and I highly recommend it to all
