About this listen

RAISED TO OBEY. DESTINED TO REBEL.

The Three Kingdoms are at war, but Meilin's father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry instead - but when she discovers that her husband-to-be is violent and ill-tempered, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

The very next day, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father's place.

In the army, Meilin's hard work brings her recognition, friendship - and a growing closeness with Sky, a prince turned training partner.

But as her kingdom barrels towards destruction, Meilin must decide who to trust: Sky, who inspires her loyalty and love; a sea dragon spirit with the power to grant her impossible magic; or an infuriating enemy prince who makes her question everything she once knew - about her kingdom, her loyalty and her own heart.

Mulan × The Poppy War

The audio is great. The narrator did a wonderful job. Very pleasant to listen to.

The story, however, was not my favourite. I could easily see the similarities with Disney's Mulan, even though the story is very different. I enjoyed that for the most part. The story also reminded me of The Poppy War series (not my favourite series).

I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked some parts of the story, but I was also bored at times and found myself zoning out and having to rewind chapters. The FMC as a character is just unlikable, in my opinion. And very dense at times. If she had any character development, I must have missed it. She's "Not like other girls" and keeps telling me she is greedy and selfish. Why? Because she wants autonomy over her own life?? I'm not seeing it. There is a lot of telling and very little showing. She wants power, but why? What are her goals? Also, her supposed great magical power is underwhelming.
All the characters just felt very flat to me. The relationship building, or lack thereof, was superficial, and the love triangle was bland at best.
I absolutely hated the ending. It just made me angry.
