BBC Radio Comedy
About this listen
A headline-crunching celebration of Radio 4's hugely successful topical comedy quiz show.
The News Quiz made its debut on Radio 4 in 1977, and four decades later it's still playfully making and breaking the headlines of our daily news.
Among the vintage gems in this collection are 25 Years of the News Quiz, in which Alan Coren, Andy Hamilton, Jeremy Hardy, John Sergeant, Linda Smith and Francis Wheen take a trip through a quarter of a century of headline news, with Radio 4 newsreaders providing cuttings (and giggles) from 1977 to 2002. Meanwhile The Archive Hour: Headlines, Deadlines and Punchlines, presented by Matthew Parris, features interviews with chairmen and panellists past and present including Barry Norman.
Also included are Barry Took and Simon Hoggart's own selections of funniest moments from the 1980s to the 2000s. The plethora of guest players featured includes Clive Anderson, Joan Bakewell, Jo Brand, Rory Bremner, Peter Cook, Edwina Currie, Nigel Dempster, Roy Hattersley, Tony Hawks, Jeremy Hardy, Ian Hislop, Richard Ingrams, Clive James, Boris Johnson, Charles Kennedy, Miles Kington, Maureen Lipman, Stuart Maconie, Steve Punt, Willie Rushton, John Sergeant, Linda Smith, Mark Steel, Janet Street-Porter, Sandi Toksvig, John Wells and many, many more.
If you enjoy your news humorously grilled, with a side order of biting wit, this vintage collection is highly recommended.
Some of the humour on this release reflects the era in which it was first broadcast.

Why were some parts repeated?

I look forward to the day where more vintage recordings will be published in audiobook format as I believe that they are the best, the news and the world to a greater extent seemed funnier and more entertaining than the current news and world surrounded by technology and madness...
I greatly enjoyed thus audiobook and will continue keeping an eye out for more audiobooks about the news quiz.
what a treat ! love the news quiz

Two of our collections are missing. So that's why only 1 star.

It does include the 25th Anniversary episode - but as it's a "best of..." in programme form.
But both Simon Hoggart and Peter Cook seem to select the same "best bits" on occasion which means if you listen to whole compilation - you might hear the same snippet 2 or 3 times.
If this was compiled by Audible or on behalf of Audibke - could the compiler please listen to what they are compiling to ensure repetition doesn't occur - or I'll have to borrow from "Just A Minute" and buzz you.
Not a selection of shows

Instead it was a mostly narrated retrospective of the show from previous hosts etc. It was a lovie fest, with a sickening round robin of gushing praise for previous hosts and guests.
As if that isn't bad enough the clips they play are mostly unfunny, which takes quite some talent as an editor, as I laugh out loud for most of the show when I catch it. They just seem to fixate on unfunny ramblings of Alan Coren and Richard Ingram. I couldn't finish it - very disappointing.
Disappointing and mis-sold
