About this listen

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but if you ask Castor he'll tell you there's quite a bit of arrogance and reckless stupidity lining the streets as well. And he should know. There's only so many times you can play both sides against the middle and get away with it.

Now, the inevitable moment of crisis has arrived, and it's left Castor with blood on his hands. Well, not his hands, you understand; it's always someone else who pays the bill: friends, acquaintances, bystanders. So Castor drowns his guilt in cheap whisky while an innocent woman lies dead and her daughter comatose, his few remaining friends fear for their lives and there's a demon loose on the streets.

But not just any demon - this one rides shotgun on his best friend's soul and can't be expelled without killing him. Looks like Felix Castor's got some tough choices to make, because expel the demon he must, or all hell will break loose. Literally....

Having just finished I'm sitting here with a distinctly empty feeling. Not empty due to the lack of story or narration but more a "what do I do now" feeling which has taken me by surprise. I've enjoyed this book and series more than I expected. The writing is clever and witty and although you can see some of the twists and turns ahead it takes nothing away from the feeling of "ah I was right" when they are unveiled. I thoroughly recommend this series.

Clever and enjoyable end to the saga

Action packed, likeable and funny characters and best of all a properly layered and multifaceted plot.

The only negative thing I have to say is that the narrator struggles with all of the regional accents of the UK. As a UK native it can be jarring when the accents don't fit the description. However the narrator does do a fabulous job with characterisation and the text tells you who has just spoken it's work-roundable.

Well put it this way, I have paid for all 5 books so far and am genuinely enjoying the world the author has built.

Hidden Gem for fantasy detective fans.

Deals with the loose ends and gives a satisfying conclusion without completely closing the door on the world created by Carey.
