About this listen

A profound, epic thriller set in Bombay—a standalone novel and a sequel to the international bestseller Shantaram.

The first glimpse of the sea on Marine Drive filled my heart, if not my head. I turned away from the red shadow. I stopped thinking of that pyramid of killers, and Sanjay's improvidence. I stopped thinking about my own part in the madness. And I rode, with my friends, into the end of everything.

Shantaram introduced millions of people to a cast of unforgettable characters through Lin, an Australian fugitive, working as a passport forger for a branch of the Bombay mafia. In The Mountain Shadow, the long-awaited sequel, Lin must find his way in a Bombay run by a different generation of mafia dons, playing by a different set of rules.

It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life. But Lin can't leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won't let him go.

Fans of Vikram Seth, John Irving and David Mitchell will love Shantaram and The Mountain Shadow.

Challenging , mixed feelings

I personally didn’t find the second book as irresistible and as enjoyable as the first one. I couldn’t stop listening to it!
In this book there were very long, frequent and often boring dialogues between characters and the story jumped from one scene to another. The story did not flow smoothly. I felt there wasn’t a main story line that held it all together, rather short stories held together by the main character being part of these stories in various ways. I decided to stick with it till the end and the second half of the last chapter explained and brought the entire book together.
I loved and very much enjoyed the first book, and the rich, engaging description of India and the characters within it.
The second book did not give that. It very much reminded me of a radio play.

Lengthy but not one chapter too long

Love all the characters. A very interesting story and well narrated. Must listen to part 1 first.

Not as good as Shantaram but still a great listen

It started off slow but was glad it still had all the same characters. What I found about the book was once listening I was totally in there with every word. I usually listen on the way to work and found I was late twice. Well done Gregory loved it.

Excellent narration

I’ve listened to Shantaram and mountain shadow. I thought this was a good sequel but was unnecessarily long. Felt some of it was too long and could have been curtailed with no loss to the story.
Still a wonderful gripping story that fully captures the magic of Shanteram. Brilliantly narrated.

The amount of joints that were smoked

We all know that the book can be often as good as the narrator! If there was an academy award ‘For the best Audible narration’ award it would go to Gregory David Roberts. Like Shantaram the narration was first class. It was an Incredible listen.

Philosophical meandering

Although this sequel is not a patch on the sleeve of Shantaram, I enjoyed it. Brilliantly and consistently narrated throughout. Some may find the many philosophy lessons tedious, each to their own though. I didn't find that they detracted from the storyline. All in all a fine epic tale which I will be happy to revisit after another couple of journeys through Shantaram.

A great sequel!

The narration of this sequel to Shantaram, is, as for the first book, outstanding! I was almost put off my some of the negative reviews of this one, but I really enjoyed the story too. There’s a lot of violence, but also so much more, fleshing out this huge story with diverse and fascinating characters and an intricate plot which eventually ties up many loose ends and puzzles in a satisfying way. I resonate with much of the spiritual content, and found the whole thing a very enjoyable and enlightening listen. I will be returning to both books for another listen, I’m sure.
