Critic reviews

"[A]n intellectual biography that seizes and sustains interest as though it were a spellbinding suspense thriller." ( Booklist)
"Downing focuses on the interior developments in Lewis's thought rather than retelling his conversion story....The narrative's firm foundation in Lewis's thoughts makes it a plausible and joyful creative journey." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Filled with interesting detail about the intellectual and spiritual communities that surrounded Lewis, the analysis is impressive without sounding academic or intellectual." ( AudioFile)

Excellent account of the spiritual journey of C S Lewis

This is a meticulously and exhaustively researched account of the gradual “conversion” of C S Lewis and for a devotee of the Lewis it will be invaluable. The only drawback for me is with C S Lewis himself. Personally, his Christianity is far to cerebral and dry for me. The Anglican Church, into which I was baptised, has always failed to bring me close to God, whereas inspiration from the likes of Saint Francis and his humility and care for others does. To me, Christianity is practical and not just cerebral. It stems from the heart and not the head. Being an academic, Lewis used his rational mind to lead him to God. This truly excellent book gave me a thorough knowledge of Lewis and his life and the writer and truly excellent narrator are to be applauded.

Further insight into a great man

How much more do I enjoy reading CS Lewis's books? Far, far more. Peralandra is now my favourite.

Kind of interesting

I am not a fan of a Biographies. This is the only one that I have completed. It opened up 'Jack' to me in a way I found interesting, informative and yet, prosaic. I don't know if I would recommend it, because I'm rather negatively biased against it, for no other reason than that I'm not a fan of Biographies! I have yet to read 'Surprised by Joy', which is C S Lewis' personal Autobiography, but I will, in due course. I may then return to review my review!
