About this listen

In the best-selling tradition of Sloan Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake and Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, here is a collection of humorous essays on what it's like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits, and black as cool.

"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward - and black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?"

Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl", is that introvert - whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or "rapping" - it sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourself - natural hair and all.

A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is a book no one - awkward or cool, black, white, or other - will want to miss.

she is so funny and I love how nonsensical and relatable her stories are.cu liked the tips and advice from an ABG guide too.

however I wish she spoke more about her career and private life/ romantic life? I can't help but be curious about how she thrives and manages it all. it would be good to hear how she gets creative inspiration and works on things.

but the childhood stories were funny and I love her as a person!

A quick and easy listen, I haven't seen the web series but I loved the confident retelling of Issa's misadventures and would love to see a film/series of her childhood exploits.

I am a big fan of Issa Rae and have followed her career from her web series The Misadventures...to her current series Insecure. An interesting life and background, its nice to read about black women beyond stereotypes and well worn tropes. Very funny in parts, I related to a lot of it and was educated by the rest of it.

Fascinating and inspiring

Loved it. Issa put into what's what I couldn't articulate about the awkward moments in life. Thoroughly enjoyed. Genuinely laughed. Recommend for anyone. You definitely do not have to be black either.
