About this listen

Warwickshire, 1840s: boys are destined for the pit and girls for the mill. Despite this, Maryann is happy there - until her mother dies. Her family collapses, leaving Maryann exhausted, and Toby, the boy she is set on marrying, insists they wait.

Then Maryann is offered a position as nanny to the daughter of the mill owner, Wesley Marshall, who Maryann grows unexpectedly close to. But their relationship doesn’t go unnoticed, threatening to unleash a world of problems on them all....

The mill girl

Another lovely book by Rosie Goodwin and so far all of her books I've listen to have been read by the same person Charlie Sanderson which I like. I just love look into my ancestry & this one I certainly found of interest the prison although not mentioned was Winston Green just outside Birmingham and until it was revamped was certainly a chilling place. My late father-in-law went in there and he would say how it terrified him when he heard them whipping the prisoners with "the cat of nine tails".
I would highly recommend this book.

Great book

This is a brilliant story. I was hooked on it right up to the very end. Charlie Sanderson is a brilliant narrator. The ending is very sad though. I must recommend it.

Lovely story

Once again, a lovely story as are all of Rosie
Goodwin’s books. Shame about the irritation of the narrator stressing words in inappropriate places, as though she does not understand the use of punctuation.

A good all round tale

This is my second title by this author, I don't know if it was just luck but it wasn't quite as good. But saying that, you shouldn't be mislead into not reading this as it truly is a very worthy read with a sad and happier times and several storylines to follow but in an easy way. Thank you once again for showing exactly what it was like to live way back in the past in the good old West Midlands.

Lots of strong characters

I think there were lots of strong characters, enough to make a trilogy in my opinion. I would have liked an epilogue.
