About this listen
Escape to the ocean with the entrancing, unforgettable winner of the Costa Book of the Year.
Features original music created for the audiobook.
Near the island of Black Conch, a fisherman sings to himself while waiting for a catch. But David attracts a sea-dweller that he never expected - Aycayia, an innocent young woman cursed by jealous wives to live as a mermaid.
When American tourists capture Aycayia, David rescues her and vows to win her trust. Slowly, painfully, she transforms into a woman again. Yet as their love grows, they discover that the world around them is changing - and they cannot escape the curse forever....

Excellent read.
I loved the two narrators. Superb performances. The prose is beautiful & an excellent commentary on interpersonal relationships as well as race and gender. Highly reccomend.

Cruelty, Love & Hope
A wonderful Caribbean story that spans generations and exposes the inner workings of these much trodden and sailed isles

Remarkable Tail
This tale is wonderful, beautifully read, a story of love, of bravery and loss, of past wrongs causing pain and guilt through the centuries. And a mermaid…what’s not to like, a most remarkable tail she has!

Beauty and simplicity
Simple and beautiful but yet an excellent book. A great reality escape, fiction that felt very real. Exciting but not too scary. I feel like this story somehow changed me and I like it.

Sensuous and raw simplicity
I appreciated the originality of this book and the genuine and emotional expressions of love and loyalty. There is a redefinition of language, as patois that guarantees the authenticity of the Caribbean protagonists and the spirit of the novel itself; expressed often in raw simplicity. The story reflects history of the islands, it’s ancient and mystical past, the colonial capture and its evolution to the present. Lots of action, much enjoyed and easily recommended.
