About this listen

When a well-known British TV historian, Marmaduke Godolphin, is found murdered in the canals of Venice during carnival, stabbed by a stiletto blade, the Venetian police are eager to have the case solved and cleared up within a day—murder is bad for tourism!

The police recruit the help of retired archivist, Arnold Clover. Godolphin had hired his services on arriving in Venice to help sort through some historical papers of note. These dusty documents may contain previously unknown information about the assassination of the murderer, Lorenzino de' Medici, 500 years previously.

How coincidental that Godolphin meets his death in the same place as the Medici murderer, Lorenzino, on a cold, dark, bloody night. Can Arnold use his powers of perception to establish a link and solve the murder of Godolphin?

Terrible editing marred a good tale

Enjoyed the food and the imagery of Venice. But utterly terrible sound editing. You could hear each time a recording session ended and started. Destroyed the flow and enjoyment of the book. No idea how any publisher signed off on this. Real shame.

A Death in Venice. Excellent

I listened to this story in several long chunks and enjoyed every minute of it. Great historical details, an interesting plot and very skilled narration. The murder happens fairly early on in the story and the author does well to keep the investigative narrative going for so long. The final denouement took me by surprise and I certainly didn't see it coming!

Brings Venice to life!

This was a super story, well plotted, complex and gripping. I suspected the final reveal from fairly early on but that didn’t spoil the pace or tension. The narrator would have earned 5 stars if he had pronounced campanile with 4 syllables and not used 3 to make it rhyme with stile

Atmospheric but dull

Good sense of location (Venice) but too much detail - began to read like a guide book. Characters not convincing. Didn’t find them likeable or interesting. Clover very dull. Plot unlikely, convoluted. Finished the book - but almost didn’t! Might try one more by this writer.

unusual crime story.

This was a slow burner for me. After 10 hrs of listening, there was no real crime committed in the story which was a disappointment and there was more of a history lesson in art and Venice and some of it was relevant. other times the author went on too long regarding places, the past and even the food !! I couldn't fault Richard Armitage's performance, he did an excellent job as always. Story could have finished a few chapters earlier. but i still enjoyed the book .

Superb performance

Richard Armitage‘s narration is superb as always. The only room for improvement are various mispronounced Italian words, maybe someone could supervise this next time. The story is a matter of taste, I found it a little boring and the author’s love for Venice shining through a bit too often.

Different and evocative listen

Different and unexpected but could have done with a good edit. Venice, history, fog and a bullying media historian’s death. Great characterisation if convoluted. Brilliantly narration

Very enjoyable !

I worked out the final twist pretty early on but the journey was still tremendously enjoyable especially with fantastic narration from Richard Armitage. As I had assumed this was in the tradition of ‘cosy crime’ one should expect over the top characterisation - the Venetian setting is a great bonus. Looking forward to the next!

This Venice is not Disneyland with gondolas!

Despite loving, art, history & the water, was never drawn to visit Venice, saw it as a tourist hot-spot best avoided, however the behind the scenes Venice opened up in The Medici Murders is fascinating.
