About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Madness of Crowds written and read by Douglas Murray.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
A Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year

Updated with a new afterword by the author

'Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues' – Jordan B. Peterson

'[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone' – Richard Dawkins

Are we living through the great derangement of our times?

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

This brilliant book explains how the madness of the intersectional left has exploded into everything and how it will destroy us all unless we take remedial a action now.

l loved it. I am looking forward to Murray's next work. This was more personal than the Strange Death of Europe, perhaps because of the subject matter. Murray gives voice to sensible thinking, his performance is also noteworthy.

great

A fantastic commentary on the weaponising of identity to push ideology in today's politics. It's a dangerous fire to be playing with and people will get burned.

Identity politics is dangerous

Whether or not you agree with the author's view-point or arguments, you will at least come out the other end with a better understanding of what many see as a serious threat to free speech and debate.

An interesting view on an increasing concern

Excellent work, well narrated by the author. Finished book in only three days. Highly recommended.

Compulsive listening

I would urge anyone who was confounded by political correctness to read this book. Indeed, anyone who has found the modern age of social media and individuals being offended on someone else's behalf will see this book as a guide to how the tolerant will not be tolerated by the intolerant left.

A Dssection of the Stupidity of Social Extremism

Douglas Murray is now officially a candidate for Britain’s most sensible person in my view. Recommend this book to all your snowflake friends and acquaintances.

Great book to help someone get upto date with current political issues.
Many of the references and throwback interviews are ones I've seen happen in real-time and listening to Douglas's view on them are very relatable to how I felt.

It's a book for people who have just started paying attention to the messy state of political discussions and nonsensical rules and even law's plaguing out lives today.

Another historical book.

Clear, concise and calm.. should be required reading for every adult interested in the world. A brilliant, thought provoking listen.

Brilliant and terrifying

All the stupidity and hypocrisy of the last 3 years at least condensed into a superbly written volume.

transcendentally important
