About this listen

For fans of Apple Tree Yard and The Silent Wife, The Loving Husband draws readers into a marriage where nothing is as it seems....

Fran Hall and her husband Nathan have moved with their two children to a farmhouse on the edge of the Fens - a chance to get away from London and have a fresh start.

But when Fran wakes one night to find Nathan gone, she makes a devastating discovery. As questions about her husband and her relationships start to mount, Fran's life begins to spiral out of control.

What is she hiding from the police about her marriage, and does she really know the man she shared her bed with?

The Loving Husband is read by Clare Corbett, the acclaimed narrator of The Girl on the Train and The Widow.

Which character – as performed by Clare Corbett – was your favourite?

The characters spoken by the narrator were excellent and clear.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did have an emotional reaction to this book and I only just made it to the end. After a few chapters I was beginning to get quite upset the way a new scene would start, then a fraction into the scene the story would dart back a bit, then dart forward, then back again - just little vignettes, but enough to mess with one's mind! And far too many half finished sentences - I guess used to create tension. It certainly made me tense!

Any additional comments?

I believe this was a sound story as far as I could pick out from the toing and froing.

Confusing

A gripping story with lots of intrigue and weaving. It is amongst the books that I was really sorry to finish. Narrated brilliantly too. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

A Really Captivating Audio Book

I loved this story, kept me up late at night and couldn't wait to get back to it. Finished it in 2 days. Narration was brilliant too.

Not what I expected at all, but once I started I was totally hooked! Not to be missed

amazing book

The first 3rd and the last 3rd are great - suspenseful, exciting, page turning, but the middle 3rd is a little dull. It drones on and on trying to build suspense and failed, in my opinion. It makes the main character sound whiny!
The narration is excellent and to be honest, this is the only reason I continued to the end.

Fair amount of waffle...

I liked this book and thought it really interesting and a bit different. However what is it with these authors and their preoccupation with small kids and babies. They main characters seem to go everywhere with small babies strapped to them and there is far to much information about full nappies and engorged boobs! I think most of these books would be better if the kids were left at home. That said this book had a good narrative and the story was different to most. I did find some of the narrators character voices annoying and very odd but liked the voice of Fran. I would add that this is one of those books that can be difficult to follow as an audio book as the author tends to jump from past to present and across characters without delineation, this is ok as an actual book as it is easy to cross check and reference where you are in terms of time and character. I found I had to really concentrate and often go back to keep pace with where I was. All in all I would recommend this book.

Interesting and unusual

Sadly a little disappointed, the plot sounded like this book was right up my street, it did take me a couple of attempts to really get into this book, I was determined I wasn't going to give up. I did enjoy the book, a couple of things in the plot didn't ring true to me, won't spoil it for you though. But yes I did enjoy it, however the ending was a little disappointing. This book didn't leave me sat in the drive outside the house in the car, desperate to hear the next twist or turn, unlike many others I have listened to recently, Overall just a shame it didn't live up to my expectations.

Was so excited waiting for this one!
