About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

As the nights get darker and colder, curl up with voices of hope and renewal - feel the natural world come back to life around you . . .

The Lost Spells is an audio treasure, a new collection of 'spells' - acrostic poetry and artwork - by writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris. For those who loved The Lost Words - this is its little sister.

Captivatingly read, calling to forest, field, riverbank, ocean and also to the heart, these 'spells' summon back what is often lost from sight and care. From Jay to Jackdaw, Oak to Barn Owl, Silver Birch to Grey Seal, they evoke the special spirit of each plant and creature. Above all, they celebrate a sense of wonder at nature's power to amaze, console and bring joy.

Across a bewitching natural soundscape by renowned wildlife recordist Chris Watson, readers Yrsa Daley-Ward, Johnny Flynn and Julie Fowlis bring the magic of both nature and language to listeners in an immersive and unique audio experience.

It's a poem

Pictures with words and sounds. Yeats' "a man who is but a dream" (The Fisherman) and "peace comes dropping slow" (Lake Isle of Innisfree") echo here. Lovely.

Mesmerising!

I love this book so much. I read it out loud to myself often and find Jackie’s artwork both beautiful and inspirational! This audio version is a welcome addition. Robert is such a talented poet and his words never fail to move me. Read beautifully!

Rich poetic prose and absorbing natural ambience

Esculence for the ears, a light languish in alliteral landscapes: a wild awoken with joy

Beautiful poems beautifully read and presented

The poems capture the essence of a handful of British birds and animals. it was only on being read the swift poem that I realised their absence from my life. Magical, funny and sometimes sad.

blowing my mind

The sound scape meshed with the voices which contribute so much to these poems make this a tiny perfect treat. Ostensibly for children this audiobook is for everyone. It should be prescribed on the national health.

Calming and Serene

Easy to listen to - though sadly quite short - this was a lovely break for rushing reality.
