About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Justice can be a blunt instrument.

'Men like him usually tell the story.

In business.

Politics.

Media.

But not this time: I repeat, he is not writing this story.'

Ritchie Gulliver MP is dead. Castrated and left to bleed in an empty Leith warehouse.

Vicious, racist and corrupt, many thought he had it coming. But nobody could have predicted this.

After the life Gulliver has led, the suspects are many: corporate rivals, political opponents, the countless groups he's offended. And the vulnerable and marginalised, who bore the brunt of his cruelty—those without a voice, without a choice, without a chance.

As Detective Ray Lennox unravels the truth, and the list of brutal attacks grows, he must put his personal feelings aside. But one question refuses to go away....

Who are the real victims here?

I’ve read a few IW novels and found this hugely enjoyable. Gory, engaging characterisation and a nice plot BUT the continual reference to the promotion interview irritated me immensely. In the police the next rank to Inspector is Chief Inspector and there would never be a board to promote straight to Chief Superintendent from inspector. Anyhow, a good, enjoyable read.

Good but procedurally irritating

Absolutely amazing, gutted to have finished it…Irvine makes the reader/listener connect with the characters in a way like no other

I love anything by Irvine Welsh and this certainly didn’t disappoint. Read ‘Crime’ first. Whilst the overall theme is disturbing, Mr W isn’t afraid to tackle any issue of modern times, and he is a master storyteller who’s characters really speak in their own voices. Nightmarish, but compellingly wonderful.

Let be it!

Both funny and intriguing. Another classic, dark and disorderly leading character Lenox unravels a gruesome case highlighting the class barriers faced in British society to a tee

Another dark and disturbing novel by Irvine Welsh and superbly narrated by Tam Dean Burn as ever.
Was disappointed when I saw the tv adaptation that left out the horrible figure of Duggie Gilman but the books are always better than the tv adaptations.
Ray Lennox’s complex character is as good as ever here as he delves deeper into his addictions and problems and yet still solves the case. Terrific characters created by Welsh and brought to life by TDB.
Five stars and can’t wait to read/listen to the next instalment.

Ray Lennox is king

It’s been a bit of a slog getting through some aspects of the narrative, the actors range of voices is sometimes tough . The voice of Mortimer is entirely painful! There the usual darkness to some of the story , still a good story to keep you involved once you get past the narration!

Getting used to the narration
