About this listen

A loving mother. A notorious murderer. They both have reasons to hide their secrets in a novel of escalating shock and suspense by New York Times bestselling author A. R. Torre.

Perla Wultz lives with her husband, Grant, and their precious daughter, Sophie, in a gated Pasadena community. Affluent, sociable, and accomplished, Perla plays the part of loving wife and mother to perfection. It seems an ideal life, if not for a decades-old crime that has become Perla’s dark and consuming secret obsession.

Twenty-three years ago, Leewood Folcrum confessed to murdering two young girls during a birthday party. Though he’s been condemned to a life sentence, his crime is not forgotten. Not by Perla, nor by an inquisitive doctoral student interviewing Folcrum for his dissertation. He’s getting the killer to open up—about his motives, his confession, and the truth of what really happened on that horrible night.

As the past and the present entwine, the deceptions behind the infamous murder begin to surface. But who’s deceiving who now? And why? And as an ingeniously twisted plan is set in motion, who will be the next to die?

I don’t even know where to begin with this story. I’m a no spoiler reviewer so this is gonna be hard. One chapter in and I was riveted, the characters, all laid out with their fears, their thoughts, their wishes, some so much more complicated than others. The whole storyline centres around the birthday party murders 20 years earlier. Jailed for a crime he says he didn’t commit, Leewood Folcrum receives regular letters from both admirers and haters. The only entertainment he has is reading the letters and writing back to those he deems worthy. Each character that is brought into the story has a different take on the murders and the whys and the hows. Only one person knows the truth. So many plot twists and turns, secrets and lies. What part do each of the characters play in the story? Will the truth prevail? Evil really does come in many forms, and how easy is it to disguise it? A real nail biter. Fantastic characters, great narration throughout from Amy Bentley, Will Damron, Neil Hellegers, Ellen Quay. Not quite sure who was who, but all performances were spot on, my favourite being Leewood Folcrum himself.

I got this book because of the hype. It was a wild ride don’t get me wrong but I think it was a little predictable and didn’t keep me as engaged as I thought. I kept checking to see how much was left of the story.

Slightly overhyped

Loved this one of my favourites! Loved the depravity of it and the ability to understand evil doesn’t always look like what you expect.

Love the depth of this book!

Hated the female narrator. Book was very far fetched. Struggled to tune into it and forced myself to listen until the end. Could have been better to read it rather than listen to it but overall would not recommend.

Should have read rather than listened.
