About this listen

THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER A heartbreaking read of loss and hope from Laura Pearson

The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…

Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.

But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.

Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.

It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.

What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…

A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

Utterly captivating from the very beginning. It was impossible not to keep listening, continually desperate to find out move about the characters.

Found the story a little slow to begin with but kept going & I'm so glad I did. A heartwarming story about love & loss & love again in later life, in a world back in the day where such love would have been frowned upon. New friendships formed in unusual ways & a different path to true love.

This book made me realise I was grieving for many things, loss of a loved one, the passing into old age and at times I cried along with the characters. Just when i thought oh dear I can't be doing this on the tube I'd then start to laugh out loud. God knows what people must have thought. Like life it really was an emotional rollercoaster. The final chapters passed with many people on the bus and tube smiling at me and I realised that was due to the fact I was wearing a gormless grin from ear to ear. that's the beauty of a good audiobook. Penelope Freeman's performance deserves an oscar, so engaging, I will be looking out for other books she has voiced. Finally Laura Pearson's writing is beautiful, draws you in and visually sets the scene to perfection. in equal parts funny, tragic and whimsical. make sure you have a big box of tissues and be prepared to get emotional and that you may take a long hard look at yourself.

Beautifully written and a wonderful performance.

I started listening to this on my way to work and quickly decided it was far too sad, and was more suitable for the return journey. However, the story became quite beautiful and had many money moments. Well worth a listen!

Sad but beautiful story

I’m not sure exactly what i was expecting but I really loved this book. It was so easy to listen to, sad in places but so lovely & inspiring too. It’s essentially a story of the many different kinds of love & friendship a person experiences.
The voice actor was great & her performance superb.
Highly recommended.
