About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Last by Hanna Jameson, read by Anthony Starke.

BREAKING: Nuclear weapon detonates over Washington

BREAKING: London hit, thousands feared dead.
BREAKING: Munich and Scotland hit. World leaders call for calm.

Jon Keller was on a trip to Switzerland when the world ended. More than anything he wishes he hadn't ignored his wife Nadia's last message.

Twenty people remain in Jon's hotel. Far from the nearest city, they wait, they survive.

Then one day, the body of a girl is found. It's clear she has been murdered. Which means that someone in the hotel is a killer...

As paranoia descends, Jon decides to investigate. But how far is he willing to go in pursuit of justice? And what happens if the killer doesn't want to be found?

Critic reviews

The Last is a brilliantly executed novel, and the questions Jameson poses-who will be with you at the end of the world, and what kind of person will you be?-are as haunting as the plot itself. This is a chilling and extraordinary book (Emily St John Mandel, author of 'Station Eleven')
Dark, original, compelling (CJ Tudor, author of The Chalk Man)

A clever, original, scarily plausible white-knuckle read

(Erin Kelly, bestselling author of 'He Said, She Said')
A brilliantly imagined tale of suspicion, betrayal and survival in a world on the brink of extinction. One of those books that you can't stop reading - but don't want to end (TM Logan, bestselling author of 'Lies')
Stephen King meets Agatha Christie, in this fantastic and highly original novel that I'll be recommending to readers for a long time to come. I loved every second of it! This is *the* book of 2019 (Luca Veste, author of 'The Bone Keeper')

Chillingly nightmarish - a gripping read

(Sophia Tobin, author of 'The Silversmith's Wife')
Gripping, and thoroughly and frighteningly believable. I could not put this book down (Jennie Melamed, author of 'Gather the Daughters')

with a taut plot, eerie and haunting felt like in this situation it is like some of us would react. It’s a compelling read. I quite like the ending tbh didn’t expect it Highly recommended!

Post- app Murder mystery ....

The narrator’s accents were really awful and inconsistent, which completely detracted from the overall story. Not an enjoyable listen, unfortunately.

Terrible accents

wow... the ending of this book is just so random and the second half of the book just so pointless. So many storylines that are just pointless and uninteresting. It starts so well but then around half way becomes just so boring and lacking focus or originality.

starts well but very poor story after half way

Packed up this book looking for an end of the world tale but ended up with a who done it crime book with nuclear war as it’s stage. Not really what I was looking for but not all bad. Narration was the saving grace for me and kept me listening.

End of the world or a who done it

A solid performance from Anthony Starke leads a nice diary entry format of making sense of the end of the world, whilst also investigating a murder

A neat story of isolation at the end of the world

There's this sentence fragment in the second to last chapter. "() I interjected, unable to stop myself, despite knowing that this wasn't about me" which I feel perfectly sums up the protagonist and what his role is in the book. It's always challenging to write such an unlikeable protagonist, especially in a first person narrative, and I had to google the author at one point to make sure it wasn't a man, because this character so perfectly expresses so many of the problems with men who think they are the hero of the story. Personally I would like to read the story from the doctor's point of view, because she seemed like a really cool character. Or the haunted drug addict, or, really, any of the other female characters. But to each her own. The writing style is good, and the premise is interesting, and only about 35% disaster porn, which is refreshing. I feel like the hints of supernatural aspects could have been more plentiful, but I mean, straight up nuclear apocalypse is fine. Anyway. Good book, don't regret spending a credit on it, only mild sleep paralysis horror material.

It's fine.

people complain about the narrators heavy american accent, but it fit perfectly. The leading character was american afterall. great narration, that made you invest in the story and characters. The story as a whole was not what I expected. The premise made it out to be a who done it murder mystery, but what more like a season of The Walking Dead minus the zombies ofcourse. It was a nice story I suppose, just not what I expected.

not what I expected

Supossed to be a mystery, it is not !. A book about what happens to people when the world ends.

Not a murder mystery

Downloaded this after Sarah Parry (The Essex Serpent) recommended it on her instagram feed & I loved it, found it addictive listening, staying up late in the night to keep hearing more! It was tense, thrilling & chilling - what more could you ask for?!

Brilliant!
