About this listen

On 25 June, 1950, the invasion of South Korea by the Communist North launched one of the bloodiest conflicts of the last century. The seemingly limitless power of the Chinese-backed North was thrown against the ferocious firepower of the UN-backed South in a war that can be seen today as the stark prelude to Vietnam.

Max Hastings drew on first-hand accounts of those who fought on both sides to produce this vivid and incisive reassessment of the Korean War, bringing the military and human dimensions into sharp focus. Critically acclaimed on publication, The Korean War remains the best narrative history of this conflict.

Narrator in particular was a highlight of this book, they did an excellent job telling the account of the Korean War.

Interesting subject matter and excellent narration

I found this book to be highly impressive and informative. It manages to focus on all the points of the Korean war, going into them in great detail and interest, but also manages to not cling to a topic fot longer than neccassary.

The narration for the book worked well. Cameron Stewart has a great voice, fitting with the book, with great pronounciation and flow.

The focus on British and other Commenwealth forces, I believe, is very important and I'm thankful Max Hastings included them in many segments to helps us remember that the Korean war wasn't just an American enterprise.

My only gripe would be that, in certain parts, the exact same line/sentence is used in different segments. This lead me to believe I'd somehow gone backwards in the book. Not so much an issue with the book, but more my own confusion.

I would definately suggest this book to those interested in military history.

Incredibly interesting, highly detailed

An excellent overview of the Korean War with frank assessments of the participants and all the subsequent events. Excellently read, including appropriate accents, and good comprehension of the subject matter.

A History of the War

A lot of people will undoubtedly know about Cuba and our near 1984 disaster with the Soviets. Few however will know how close the US came to using The Bomb in The Korean War! What a disaster that would have been! A well told piece of history, once again, a waist of human life.

A Bloody Time In History.

Fantastic introduction

I really enjoyed learning about the history of the Korean War, a subject I knew very little about. The narrator’s performance was excellent and his ability to use accents greatly added to the account and he clearly knew how to pronounce military terms correctly which is a big bugbear for me with other narrators.

I like Hasting’s books generally but at times this account did drag and occasionally seemed to lack direction. Thankfully it would eventually pick up and I got to the end much wiser and happy for the hours I’d committed to it. I would definitely recommend the book.

A fascinating history of the 50’s Korean War

I read a lot about this continent, where I live, the people here are so different from westerners. Max Hastings has captured this quality in this account of post WW2.
As I write this, Ukraine is fighting for survival. I hope they triumph.
