Oh dear. I didn’t like ANY of the characters and found the plot pretty unbelievable.
Narration was fine, considering the material.

Underwhelmed

A long book which develops quite well, albeit a bit confusingly at times, a number of themes and characters. Well read but it rather fizzles out at the end with no clear resolution other than the one the listener’s imagination provides.

Interesting and intriguing

It seem all so predictable and clear, all imagination and pretence and dubious motives, nobody to trust to be without planning and conniving. Wouldn’t that be easy to resolve? Well too easy for sure so the fitting end leaves more mysteries to solve. The suspense was driving me impatient as it seemed so logical what could be the only outcome but knowing Ruth Rendells stories there’d be a twist or two and a plunge in the end to push it all open again. The drama is nicely increased by the very capable narrator. He transferred the story to another level of drama and increased the tension immensely. More and more the actors of the stories became puppets in a theatre just not sure who or what pulled the strings or who or what the real monster was in the end. Whatever it was it should be back in the box again or I will hear some parts of the narration in my dreams.

Definitely worth a listen

I chose this book because I love Ric Jerrom as a narrator, and have all the Aubrey/ Maturin books. I’d heard of Ruth Rendell of course but not thought she would be my cup of tea. How wrong I was! Skilfully constructed and inexorably plotted, this book had me from the first sentence. And of course Ric’s performance was masterful as always.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as others by the author. There are too many characters who make little impression and the two story lines don't have much to do with each other and one of which goes nowhere and adds nothing to the book except adding more characters.
