About this listen
How well do you know the person you love?
A woman's body is washed up on the rocks by the castle ruins in St Andrews with evidence of strangulation, and no ID. Two days into the case, a call from another woman claiming to be the victim's friend could be DCI Andy Gilchrist's first solid lead. But when she fails to turn up for an interview, Gilchrist fears the worst. The next day, they find her battered body.
Gilchrist's focus centres on his prime suspect, a local handyman with the reputation of being a ladies' man, who seems to have no history beyond three years - the length of time he's been living in the East Neuk. But before Gilchrist can bring him in for questioning, he vanishes.
Would you trust the person you love with your life? If you do, they might just take it.
There’s a good action-packed conclusion and certain aspects of the plot will make you wince. One very early clue in particular has a real “bite” to it and will have most people crossing their legs in contemplation. So it is hard-hitting without being the over the top gore fest that we saw in “The Meating Room” and with a good balance of action and character-driven story lines to improve on the slower “Blood Torment”. The police procedural aspects remain impressive.
It will be no great surprise that those character story lines naturally don’t make things easier for our heroes. Gilchrist struggles with family relationships and a difficult new boss but it’s Jessie that you will end up shedding a tear with. This is another strength of the series, the female characters are very strong, given prominent parts and in Jessie we have a real star who makes the series every bit as much as Gilchrist himself.
In short if you got through the previous two books but were perhaps having doubts I think this one will salve most of them and prove ultimately satisfying.

Anyone reading series should start with book one and work through series to appreciate how clever the twists and turns are not only in storylines but in each of the lives and relationships within police service and personal lives of the main characters throughout series 👌i have lost so much sleep 💤 being unable to stop listening to my audio version of this book that David Monteath brings to life but so worth it .
