About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Chris Harding's enormously enjoyable new book distils Japan's long, complex and fascinating history into the stories of 20 remarkable individuals. These vivid and entertaining portraits take the listener from the earliest written accounts of Japan right through to the life of the current empress, Masako. We encounter shamans and warlords, poets and revolutionaries, scientists, artists and adventurers - each offering insights of their own into this extraordinary place.

For anyone new to Japan, this book is the ideal introduction. For anyone already deeply involved with it, this is a book filled with surprises and pleasures.

A brilliantly written series of profiles that wonderfully illuminate Japanese history and culture. Harding evolves previous attempts to weave a wholistic and collective image of Japanese identity, blending myth and fictions, with factual accounts and matters of record. Deeply inspiring and excellently orated.

Superb story-telling

Perfect narration perfect for a japanophils or NOT. I immediately listened to the authors other book on Meiji era onward . I go to Japan often bit my understanding of it increases dramatically from this book . Tho we’re never going to be “ allowed “ to fully grasp Japan but that’s part of its beauty . Gorgeously done researched narrated !

One of my favorite books EVER!
