About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Most family reunions end in tears. This one will end in murder.

On a private island off the west coast of Scotland, the Agarwals gather for a much-awaited family reunion…

Raj, the patriarch and business tycoon, who has six weeks to decide how to split his petrochemicals empire between his three children.

Shalini, the fragile mother, who longs to see her family healed.

Myra, the eldest daughter and golden child, who, unbeknownst to the family, is on the brink of bankruptcy.

Aseem, the son and supposed heir, who must choose between his wife and his family.

Aisha, the fun-loving youngest daughter, who is tired of being treated like a child.

And Zoe, the outsider whose #Instaperfect life is built on a foundation of lies.

They’ve all got secrets that they would die to protect.

But only one of them is capable of murder.

‘Sakhlecha’s glamorous thriller portrays a dysfunctional family doing despicable things in the name of love.’ Washington Post

‘With echoes of the TV dramas Succession and The White Lotus, but also of Agatha Christie and The Traitors, Trisha Sakhlecha’s third novel centres on a wealthy Indian family, the Agarwals, who gather on a Scottish island to celebrate Papa and Mama’s wedding anniversary... As the family crisis unfolds, Sakhlecha displays a Christie-like knack for misdirection, framing everyone on the island as at once a potential victim and a potential killer.’ The Times

A very slow first half which is hard to stick with as the characters are flat and uninteresting - every one a perfect cliché. Suddenly, the pace changes and the backstories are revealed. Finally, the obligatory dénouement. No great surprises there, I’m afraid. The author never manages to inject any tension or suspense into what is a promising set up. I wonder if it would be better as a book; the narrators, like the text itself, were competent but lacklustre.

Needs a shot of adrenaline.

A story of about a rich Indian family that is tragic on several levels. A mystery in which the key characters are haunted by the past that is only gradually revealed, I felt that I had known of people like this, particularly in India and amongst the most privileged, but so serious and remote.

Tragic on several levels

A much hyped book..
The premise was more interesting than the story turned out to be…
A family of not very likeable people, selfish and greedy, so much so that I didn’t care if anyone died…and the end was too ridiculous…

A Great Idea….

The Readers tried to transmit the story, however the plot was so weak that even with clear annunciation and cadence, sadly, they failed! Oh dear!

Weak almost unbelievable plot
