About this listen

Moscow, 2138. With the world only beginning to recover from the complete societal collapse of the late 21st Century, Zoya scrapes by prepping corpses for funerals, and dreams of saving enough money to have a child. When her brother forces her to bring him a mysterious package, she witnesses his murder and finds herself on the run from ruthless mobsters. Frantically trying to stay alive and save her loved ones, Zoya opens the package and discovers two unusual data cards - one that allows her to fight back against the mafia, and another which may hold the key to everlasting life.

This story involves chapters set in various points of view of the multiple characters. It was sometimes confusing due to the Russian names, but after a while it began to sync.

The main characters at times appeared either very naive or just had no common sense. But, then this is typical among young people.

The story involved a father who was an AI sending his son to Russia in an attempt to obtain information on research being done. The son gets involved with a girl who is being pursued by the Russian mob and refuses to be extricated.

The story line itself was decent. It flowed well and achieved it's purpose of entertainment.

The narrator's voice was not ideal for me and took a lot of effort to follow the story.

This was a rather confusing listen to begin with, especially with the various Russian accents, lots of characters, and several POVs. But as the storylines started to come together, it became better and finished up an excellent story. My only slight gripe was that the narrator had a slightly annoying speech impediment, saying 'a-' in front of miscellaneous words which was rather off-putting. Again, this improved as the book went on, but maybe I was just getting used to it.

Confusing at first, but stick at it

This was a good yarn, well written and with plenty humour sprinkled throughout. A decent mix of action, some snappy dialogue and some interesting sci-fi ideas kept me intrigued throughout. Whilst I enjoyed the story, I found the narration to be a little monotone…and so fast that I had to listen at a slower speed to allow the narrative to breathe and to let some ‘dynamic‘ make its way into the storytelling. Without doing so, it was mostly too breakneck a speed of delivery for me. I will listen, happily, to another story by Ted Cross but I will probably try to avoid the narrator in future.

Great story - but…

This is my first go at one of Ted's books, have to say I'm really impressed with his Excellent world building, thoroughly believeable tech, compelling story arcs that come to a very satisfying conclusion. Lots of action, some pretty dark places too, give it a go!

Thumping good scifi thriller
