About this listen

The House of Fortune is a glorious, sweeping story of fate and ambition, secrets and dreams, and one young woman’s determination to rule her own destiny.

In the golden city of Amsterdam, in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning eighteen, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. At the city’s theatre, Walter, the love of her life, awaits her, but at home in the house on the Herengracht, all is not well—her father Otto and Aunt Nella argue endlessly, and the Brandt family are selling their furniture in order to eat. On Thea’s birthday, also the day that her mother Marin died, the secrets from the past begin to overwhelm the present.

Nella is desperate to save the family and maintain appearances, to find Thea a husband who will guarantee her future, and when they receive an invitation to Amsterdam’s most exclusive ball, she is overjoyed—perhaps this will set their fortunes straight. And indeed, the ball does set things spinning: new figures enter their life, promising new futures. But their fates are still unclear, and when Nella feels a strange prickling sensation on the back of her neck, she remembers the miniaturist who entered her life and toyed with her fortunes eighteen years ago. Perhaps, now, she has returned for her…

Producer took a nap!

Love this author and enjoyed the story, would like to know what happens next. Someone fell asleep during the editing though; the narrator corrected herself numerous times to improve on her delivery, but these haven't been edited out, which is poor.

Good sequel but carless production

Good sequel but spoiled by performers retakes not being edited out . Loved hearing the characters again but why didn’t producers remove the performers do overs ?

Ok, nothing special

The Miniaturist was great, this was somewhat slow and predictable. Matched by slow narration; I listen at 1.4 times speed and sounded like a normal pace!

Very absorbing

A beautifully descriptive story that I found very absorbing. I felt I was observing the characters as they went about their daily lives.

Lovely sequel

I loved The Miniaturist and this is a wonderful sequel. The characters are so vivid, and the dilemmas they face so modern. It is wonderfully written, though I didn’t like the narrator so much.. rather ponderous in tone.

Really compelling read!

I read the Miniaturist a few years ago, and glad that I did! Although it's not vital, I think ties everything together. Well rounded and interesting characters. Had to keep listening to know what became of Thea. 😊

Unnecessary sequel

Well this most definitely has not been at all like the first book, not much suspense, almost no sign of the miniaturist and an absolutely unlikeable teenager. I really hope the author doesn't think to make a third book about Nella's brother popping out of nowhere wanting part of the family business and somehow - plot twist - he was married all along to the miniaturist.

Also really wish Madeleine Mantock would be a bit more expressive, the narration was so dull and monotone like every character was on Valium or something.

Beautifully written and absorbing story

I love the way Jessie Burton writes and the narrator did a wonderful job let down by the editor who was sloppy! I’ve never listened to such a badly edited audio book (and I listen to a lot of audiobooks!). Don’t be put off though. I highly recommend it.

Super stand alone sequel

Transports you back to the era. The twists and turns of family life exposed for their honesty through deception.

Loved it!

I was so immersed in this world again after so long away. I know others have reviewed saying characters are unlikeable and narration is patchy, but for me as someone who loved the first book I was devastated to think how Nella had lost herself but I was so satisfied with how it plays out, I was so disappointed when it finished and wanted to continue into their next phase so much. I do hope there is another instalment to come!
