I don't really get it with the mysterious M, it is like a guest appearance by a Bond villain: "Good evening Mr Cross, we meet again" etc. Please keep it rooted in reality.

On Audible’s recommendation, after finishing this listen, I went right back to the beginning and started on Cross book 1, and after finishing it, all I could think was how they don’t make ‘em like they used to anymore. Book 1 (book 2 and so on) are so finely crafted, in-depth stories with proper character development. Now, the stories are trying to be like a Bond film where it’s action packed, doesn’t build suspense and just generally not as good. I would love it if Cross could go back to his roots and if Patterson would stop with the stack ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap ethos that seems to be how all his stories turn out nowadays.
