About this listen

A heartwarming and humorous blend of fantasy, romance, and mystery featuring a witch with domestic powers and the royal household he serves...dinner.

When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals.

But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs. As his powers are gradually discovered by the court, Fin finds himself involved in a slew of intrigues: going head-to-head with knights with less-than-chivalrous intentions, helping to protect the pregnant queen, fending off the ire of the royal mage, and uncovering a spy in the castle. And that’s only the beginning—because Fin’s past is catching up with him just as his love life is getting complicated . . .

Filled with fascinating characters, courtly intrigue, political machinations, delicious cuisines, cuddly companions, magical hijinks, and will-they-won’t-they romance, The House Witch is the first in a captivating new series, guaranteed to satisfy the tastes of any listener.

The first volume of the hit romantic-fantasy series—with more than a million views on Royal Road!

Highly original & most enjoyable

Loved everything. Could not improve on a thing, although wish I could hear the original cat’s voice.

A good story

I found it to be a well written book, and the narrator was fun to listen to.

Story that keeps you wanting more!

Really enjoyable story, great characters, will be getting the second in the series straight away! Although I agree with others about the cats- such a weird choice of accent! It doesn’t distract from the story though.

Brilliant story and narration

Absolutely brilliant. Such a cute cosy story. The romance kind of just happens with not much chemistry but it levels out. Really happy that there are more books! I was getting a bit stressed in the last couple of chapters so checked xD

Narration is great - Krakens voice is a bit cringe but it works fine. I enjoyed all the different accents! Highly recommend.

heart tugging caring warmth

emotionally damaged mc that this politically charged story sets about fixing slow burn romance with a few juvenile laughs

The story engaging and cozy

I disagree with a lot of the lower star reviews, this book isn’t about being progressive, it’s about telling a story about the difficulties in class and how discrimination is a very Human affliction. I will agree the narrator’s voice for the cat was truly horrendous and for some reason changed completely in the later books when the cat is older to a completely different vernacular that in normal life would not make any sense. However the people complaining about people in the book liking Finley despite him being arrogant at first and rude, forget he is a witch and what his food does to people, also it reflects real life as people are complicated, my partner annoys the hell out of me but I love him. I feel like people nowadays want every book to be a champion of the genders and full of LGBT+ people who are the pillar of society but it’s a fantasy book and set in a medieval type era, where yes it would have existed but it wouldn’t have been accepted as the norm, trying to push modern ideals into a book based on an era of human history that it wouldn’t have been as accepted or well understood is ridiculous, I think this book did well to incorporate it and do not feel like it was made fun of, more that there were those that disapproved and those that defended it which is how it is even in modern times.

People are too critical, they want a book full of people that are unrealistic and monotone, mysoginistic behaviour exists, if all the men in this book were champions of girl power it wouldn’t make sense and would be a dull read.
