I haven't been able to get through the first 10 minutes of this book due to the narrator. His voice isn't terrible, and I'm sure he's good in other books. But when it comes to a book about Irish history, I don't understand why nobody thought to hire someone that can actually pronounce Irish words.

The names in Irish history (especially pre Christian Ireland) are hard enough to keep up with at the best of times, but they are not written phonetically in an English sense. Irish as a language has specific sounds for collections of letters (like 'bh" being pronounced as a "v", or "ng" making a "nya" sound) and it's clear nobody told this narrator. I genuinely can't figure out who he is talking about. It's like listening to a book where someone insists on calling knights "ke-nig-hets". It just makes for a really uncomfortable listen.

In short, this seems like a really interesting book but sadly the audio is just too distracting for me. Might try pick up a hard copy.

I wasn't expecting much, to be fair, but this really was terrible. Mispronunciations of place names, calling Derry Londonderry, a bit of chest thumping about how noble the Irish are and a really thin understanding of history. I had to stop listening. I hope I get a refund.

Should appeal to American teenagers.
