About this listen

Following the recent death of her husband, Clare Hills is unsure of her place in the world. When her former university friend Dr David Barbrook asks her to help him sift through the effects of deceased archaeologist Gerald Hart, she sees this as a useful distraction.

During her search, Clare stumbles across the unpublished journals detailing Gerald's most glittering dig. Supposedly destroyed in an arson attack, she cannot believe her luck. Finding the Hungerbourne Barrows archive is every archaeologist's dream.

Determined to document Gerald's career-defining find for the public, Clare and David delve into his meticulously kept records of the excavation. But the dream suddenly becomes a nightmare as the pair unearth a disturbing discovery.

I love finding new books touching on archaeology but why are female writers intent on giving us pathetic female leading characters? Nicola Ford isn’t alone in this as frankly I can’t stomach Elly Griffiths’s Ruth Galloway either. At least The Hidden Bones was read by a decent male voice as I’m afraid, though a women’s libber to the core, I prefer to listen to male narrators than the higher register of most female narrators’ voices. I’m not sure if I’ll buy another novel by this author if she continues with the same character but I suspect I’ll grit my teeth and try a second book for the archaeological setting and hope that if it does centre on the somewhat histrionic, pathetic and rather stupid Clare Hills the author might give her more backbone and self confidence as she develops as an archaeologist.

Interesting for the archaeology but ...
