About this listen

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

The scariest monsters are those you don't see explicitly, and imagine in your own head. This book lets you do that brilliantly and leaves you with a satisfied feeling at the end, although probably not the end you were predicting. The characters work well as a small but varied bunch with little in common, exploring the house and its mysteries. I liked the slow, but not too slow, increasing feeling of unease, and wondering what the nest escalation will be. If you like ghost or supernatural stories at all, then this is a must for your library.

Spooky yet thought provoking

glad it was a short story. found it pretty boring, wouldn't class it as scary

It was okay, a little spooky but not as scary as I would have imagined. more sad than anything.

Good atmosphere and an interesting idea for the house.

I loved the Netflix show so bought this, but it is absolutely nothing like the show. Totally different plot, no detailed storyline and I wouldn’t call it scary at all, but ok if you don’t have expectations of what it is.

Nothing like the Netflix show, but not bad

The story itself isn't too bad. It has a high-ranking place in ghost story lore so that's why I thought I'd give it a go.

It took me absolutely ages to get through it, purely because of two reasons:

1. The narrator, in my opinion, does the story no justice. Her voice for Eleanor sounds dreadful. I just can't describe how much her voice irks me.

2. The characters don't act or even talk like real people would in certain places. I think my main problem is the character of Eleanor.

But this is just my opinion. Other people have given it good reviews, so I think Haunting on Hill House really is one of those that you have to try for yourself.

Not bad, but has its drawbacks

This is such a fantastic story. I've seen the Netflix series and was utterly gripped, however had to force myself through this audiobook as the narrator's voice was really not to my liking. I wasn't able to listen to the sample before purchasing and was so frustrated listening to this.

Would have been great if not for the reading 😔

I’ve watched the black and white film adaptation and a more recent one, so I knew where the scary bits would be, but this narrator is brilliant and her whispered ‘Elanoooooor’ gave me chills! As with every ghost story, the story is sad and really about trauma, but I still loved it as a scary book.

Just as I hoped it would be!
