Long before Charles Dickens and Henry James popularized the tradition, the shadowy nights of winter have been a time for people to gather together by the flicker of candlelight and experience the intoxicating thrill of a ghost story.
Now eight best-selling, award-winning authors - all of them master storytellers of the sinister and the macabre - bring the tradition to vivid life in a spellbinding new collection of original spine-tingling tales.
Taking you from the frosty Fens to the wild Yorkshire moors, to the snow-covered grounds of a haunted estate, to a bustling London Christmas market, these mesmerizing stories will capture your imagination and serve as your indispensable companion to cold, dark nights.
So curl up, light a candle and fall under the spell of winters past....

A wonderful set of ghostly stories
Loved the reading of these short stories. The narrators were all amazing at bringing these ghostly tales to life. Really enjoyed all the stories.

A bit slow
Performances a little stilted at lacking in expression at times. The stories have a slower pace. I found the first two stories much more engaging than the rest.

patchy performance but nice stories
The reader of the Natasha Pulley story is abysmal. She cannot do accents to save her life so Mori ends up sounding like a racist Asian stereotype.

Chilling stories
A really spooky collection of ghost stories, they were more chilling than scary so they were perfect for me.. lite creepy horror I can do but anything more is too much for me…my favourite was book 1 - A Study in Black and White by Bridget Collins About a man who rents an abandoned house and the chess set already set up moves every night..

Not brilliant ghost stories
I've listened again and to be honest it bored me. I tried to remember the stories from the first time I listened and none of them memorable. Disappointing yes, some of the narrators brilliant but the stories let them down. The best out of the lot was the Chillingham Chair. I listened again as they've brought out another book from the same series and I first thought I didn't have this one and was going to purchase before I listened to volume 2......... That's how memorable volume 1 is as I forgot I even had it!!!!!!!!!!
If you like a good ghost story then listen to M R James or Stephen Fry's compendium of ghost stories.

Perfect for when the nights are drawing in
A superb collection of short stories by some of my favourite authors. A lovely mix of spooky, chilling and unexplained.
Perfect narrators too.

Two good stories
‘A study in Black and White’ and ‘Thwaites Tennant’ are both exceptionally brilliant stories. The rest gave me a heavy dose of confusion and white room syndrome, and left me feeling more than a little irritated at why a publisher accepted them, I’m sorry to say. Disappointing from MacNeal, given the brilliant ‘The Doll Factory.’
