About this listen
Celine Sutherland is dead - her body half-hidden under the Atlantic City Boardwalk - and Damien Dickens, P.I. killed her. Detective Lt. James Holmes found Damien's gun and wallet near the crime scene, and discovered Celine's cash-filled, emerald-studded evening bag hidden in Damien's apartment. Sylvia Sutherland, Celine's older sister and CEO of the family's tobacco empire, insists that Dickens pulled the trigger. And the Sutherlands carry a lot of influence in Atlantic City. Even Damien's secretary has deserted him - gone to work for the Sutherlands. Only Celine's younger sister, Susan, believes in his innocence.
After Susan bails him out of jail, Damien follows his gut and a series of clues in order to clear his name. His quest takes him to several Atlantic City landmarks, inland to Everettville, a small New Jersey town, and north to Vermont, where he confronts Celine's killer.
The Green Pearl Caper, set in the summer of 1979, is the first in a series of Damien Dickens mysteries.

This is a proper murder mystery with twists and turns and it was a great listen - I look forward to meeting with these characters again.
Great starting point for this crime series

This is a well thought out private investigator tale along the lines of Raymond Chandler but it doesn't quite make that level. Set in the late 1970s and introducing us to his efficient and clever office manager/secretary Millie, who is also his girlfriend, and Gus his attorney as solid supporting cast members. This is entertaining, it kept me interested, has a few plot misdirections and red-herrings and is a well paced novel.
The narrator was good but was let down by slightly dodgy female voices and more irritatingly by poor production, which intermittently changes tone, or pace, and at least once was just inaccurate.
Overall though this was worth a listen and I got though it in a day.
I am looking forward to the next in the series.
A good start to the series.

Within 24 hours, Celine is found dead, and Dickens is the prime suspect. To prove his innocence Dickens will have to use his own skills to investigate Celines murder and the secrets of the Sutherland family to prove his innocence and find the real murderer.
This is an easy to listen to "whodunnit" with wonderful reminders through the dialogue of a simpler time gone by, such as the type writer and lack of mobile phones. The author creates likeable characters and the narrator has a rich well paced voice.
Entertaining, easy-to-listen to murder mystery

If you want to listen to a murder mystery, set in the 1970s with a great set of characters, such as Damien Dickens, PI, his assistant Millie, with humour, this is for you. Dickens is framed for murder and has to prove his innocence and find the real killer. This book has a good pace, keeping you guessing until the end. There are plenty of suspects

Celine's body was found under the Altlantic City Boardwalk (pier?), soon after she came to Dick for help. He feels responsible for her death and blames himself for not being able to protect her. The clues, however, suggest that Damien Dickens himself, was responsible for her murder and he is duly arrested.
Celine's sister and brother-in-law are owners of a huge tobacco concern and there is much family conniving and interaction, which gives an interesting twist to the plot.
My one issue with the book was the excessive description of what everyone was wearing whenever they entered the story, which became irritating after a while.
This was an enjoyable first book, paving the way for future adventures, ably narrated by Tom Lennon, although his female voices were less convincing. I am looking forward to Book 2.

Damien Dickens is a private investigator and the star of this series.
He comes across as a cozy mystery version of Harry Bosch, surrounded by other quirky characters, a fun whodunit.
This, the first one is set in 1979, introducing us to how he gets involved with Millie , and then following their exploits solving the mystery
The audiobook is very easy to listen to and I look forward to finding out what Damien gets up to in the next books.
The narrator has a pleasant voice that suits the story.
Cozy whodunnit

Also I enjoyed learning about Atlantic City - as a non-American I really didst know a lot about it.
The narration was perfect it really suited the story and that just makes it so enjoyable to listen. But I also got the slight changes in editing which did get my attention.
I was given a free copy by the author but this in no way influenced my review.
Really enjoyable - narration was brilliant
