تنطلق الرواية من قصّة "ديزيري جونسون" هذا السجين المحكوم عليه بالإعدام في فرنسا حيث تتشكل عقدة الحكاية عند تعبير المتهم عن رغبته الأخيرة في تدخين سيجارة قبل أن يُقاد إلى كرسي الاعدام، وإن بدت رغبته هذه بسيطة وسهلة التحقيق وفقاً للفصل 47 من قانون العقوبات الذي يسمح بتحقيقها، إلا أنه وفقاً للفقرة 176 من النظام الداخلي للسجن يُمنع منعاً باتاً التدخين داخل السجن!!

هذا الأمر كشف ثغرةً في القانون مما أجّل من إعدام المتهم ثمَّ حدثَ أمرٌ ما قلب حياته رأسًا على عقب وجعله من محكومٍ بالإعدام إلى صاحب تأثيرٍ في الرأي العام.

"الصبية والسيجارة" علامة من علامات أدب الديستوبيا، أدب المدينة الفاسدة، في القرن الحادي والعشرين، ولكنّها دستوبيا ساخرة تعرّي بخفّة تهافت عالم من المثل والأحلام والقيم حتّى تغدو صنوًا للثقل ويصبح الكائن لا يحتمل.
