Not only a mystery novel but an entertaining and informative view of the history of the British rule in Singapore, before the Second World War. Ms Yu writes very well drawn characters that it’s a pleasure to get to know. Looking forward to enjoying more books in this series.

As with a few audiobooks I have listened to recently, the narrator lets down the author. I find it incredibly annoying when they mispronounce words. It puts me off the story. I also found this particular narrator hard to follow. There’s no doubt the book is worth reading and I would like to follow up on the series but not with an audiobook; sadly, her voice is just too monotonous.
