About this listen

The Four Winds, an instant New York Times bestseller and Richard and Judy Book Club Pick, is a deeply moving story about the strength and resilience of women and the bond between mother and daughter, by the bestselling author of The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah.

She will discover the best of herself in the worst of times . . .

Texas, 1934. Elsa Martinelli had finally found the life she’d yearned for. A family, a home and a livelihood on a farm on the Great Plains. But when drought threatens all she and her community hold dear, Elsa’s world is shattered to the winds.

Fearful of the future, when Elsa wakes to find her husband has fled, she is forced to make the most agonizing decision of her life. Fight for the land she loves or take her beloved children, Loreda and Ant, west to California in search of a better life. Will it be the land of milk and honey? Or will their experience challenge every ounce of strength they possess?

From the overriding love of a mother for her child, the value of female friendship and the ability to love again – against all odds, Elsa’s incredible journey is a story of survival, hope and what we do for the ones we love.

A wonderful and interesting but sad tale

The narrator was amazing. She had such a soothing voice without jarring once! What a tale and I am sure it was very well researched. Such bravery of so many people in such hardship. I had read this author before on her tale of Alaska "The Great Alone" which was equally good. I would definitely recommend this.

I wanted to know the end and I never wanted this storey to end. I was there, back in time, feeling the struggle, the strength and the love.

Beautiful book, sad story that inspires hope...

I loved this book, a sad but inspriring story of strength of women in difficult times. the narrator brought the characters to life and set the scene so well. I did know much about the history of the great depression in 30s America and this book gave me a greater understanding of why and what happened during the migration of the workers across Texas and other counties. The interview with the writer and narrator at the end of the book provided interesting background to the story. This was a great read that I could not put down.

Thought provoking

Couldn’t stop listening to this book. Brilliantly written and brilliantly read. This book has led me to find out more about the great migration during the depression years. Quite an achievement for a book

simply beautiful

This book is the second book I have listened to of Kristin Hannah.

The great alone has a beautiful story and in a sense this story tells in my knowledge about the same.

how people try and try to face the suffering. they live up by things that bring happiness.

people try to face the suffering on their road, until it is enough. they can't face it anymore.

some might give up and like in this story the suffering made Elsa and her kids fight.

it is a beautiful book.

I don't know if the story ends happily, but at least Elsa was fighting and she finally found the courage she needed most in her life.

Her kids have become strong and have learned so much from their mum.

A mum's love is always recognized at the end.

a must read for you.
