About this listen

Captain Jack Aubrey, RN, arrives in the Dutch East Indies to find himself appointed to the command of the fastest and best-armed frigate in the Navy. He and his friend Stephen Maturin take passage for England in a despatch vessel. But the War of 1812 breaks out while they are en route. Bloody actions precipitate them both into new and unexpected scenes where Stephen's past activities as a secret agent return on him with a vengeance.

I love this series, but this one wasn't my favourite.

A bit slow going with not much story
Just a bit lacking compared to the last two books which were great.

The best book in the series so far

I’ve enjoyed this book more than any other on the series so far and they’ve all been good. The final chapter is outstanding. The narration, flawless.

A gripping tale extremely well told.

The Aubrey Maturin series of novels are some of the best historical fiction ever written. I have heard other audio books by different narrators but Mr Jerrom stands alone. His grasp of the nuances of the characters is quite simply peerless. Now if only Netflix or Amazon would pick up the series...

stellar all the way through.

POB is just masterful and Ric Jerrom's performance a joy. Character development, plot, atmosphere and eloquence. I just love it. Jack and Stephen have become as friends to me.

Another fabulous one

Sometimes, with these reviews, It's hard to make a distinction between whether you are providing a score for the story, or the narration.

Fortunately, with all of this series read by Ric Jerrom, there is no need to make that distinction. The books are, of course, fabulous, and this is a narration worthy of them.
