About this listen

This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.

Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

From a shadowy tracker who mysteriously comes to Frodo's aid to an essential member of the Fellowship of the Ring to the long-awaited king who restores harmony and peace to Middle-earth, Aragorn plays many important roles in the fantasy epic. Andy Serkis is a master storyteller

You would think there were many voice actors in this book as Andy is able to distinguish each and every character. A joy to read, he really brings this story to life and I couldn’t stop listening.

I couldn't stop listening to this book, and Serkis narration was very easy to listen to! It brought me back to my childhood days as I read this book then.

Great Performance

I have always wanted to read these books. I am a massive fan of the film's. I think this is one of those rare cases where the film outshines the book. Andy helped a very long book possible to finish and I praise him for it. but yes I will stick with the film's on this instance.

Superb

This reading of the book is amazing, Andy Serkis does justice to the story and made the time fly past. On to the two towers now and I’m excited to be listening again.

Lovely, animated reading

I'm commenting only on the narration here, since the story is an unrivalled classic. I really enjoyed listening to this - the character voices are well done, although sometimes they do feel a little like overly faithful impressions of the movie characters. The narrator's change of cadence is put to good effect and keeps the story flowing during parts that could be dreary if read at a constant pace. I did find some of the songs a bit overly enthusiastic - Tom Bombadill's and some of the Hobbit songs in particular did have me cringing and desperately fumbling for the volume down button! But overall this is a great and highly engaging listen from start to finish!

Edit: I think it's also worth pointing out that while the Rob Ingles version is very well-loved, it desperately needs remastering. Just go listen to the samples of that one and this, and you will be shocked by the difference in audio quality. To some that may be superficial, but for me it's a game changer.

Lovely

Just like with the Hobbit, Andy Serkis does a great job as narrator. So glad he has recorded this trilogy as well - can recommend!

Amazing by Serkis

Andy Serkis deserves an award for his reading. I never want to turn it off and I forget there isn't a team of actors reading.
