I enjoyed the book- the language must be listened to in context- 1937- N word, foreign people, tye use of 'rape' as a cure all suggested by me. That is utterly disgusting. Thank goodness womens rights have changed from this patriarchal, dismissive, frankly, insulting period. Still a way to go but Margery Allingham seems to push the idea as if it is what women should be. I love the lexicon, the vocabulary and peculiarities of the classes. I loathe the way the upper classes treat those not in their clique. The story is great, if you can get beyond her dated beliefs. It would be a good updated novel but unrepeatable as is.

Really enjoyed the telling of this story - have read all Marjorie Allingham's books previously but often enjoy books being read to me that I already know. Somehow adds an extra dimension. Steady who/how dunnit without too many alarms and excursions - good bedtime listen. Will now seek out some further titles and renew my acquaintance with Mr Campion.

Well plotted but so racist, anti Semitic and snobbish that it was quite a shock to modern values and attitudes. At times I thought the reader was on autopilot but overall OK.

Great storytelling but 'of it's time' so beware liberal use of the N word, racism and suggestions of rape as a way of sorting out women - doesn't sit well with modern society but none of that was unusual thinking. It is well written, those things aside, and with well drawn characters and good plot.

The mystery parts of the story are actually pretty good: the author leads us on a merry chase, but the attitudes toward women, working women, women's fashions, and alternate lifestyles are very dated, and kind of get in the way of enjoying the story sometimes. Nice to see some characters returning from earlier books.

Nice job reading by Francis Matthews. I enjoy his characterisations of both men and women in the story.

Overall, I will probably listen to this one again, but I'll skip over some sections.

I’m halfway through the book (which is enjoyable standard Campion) but want to warn potential purchasers that there are quite a few uses of the n-word. I know the book is of its time, but I’m surprised that someone hasn’t thought to edit it out now.

I usually listen to audible book while I’m cooking with my kids around - luckily they weren’t in the room at the time.

Allingham is a wonderful writer as much interested in character than the mechanics of murder. Everything she writes is worth reading. But there are some starling attitudes to women in this which I can only think were integral to the prevailing culture at the time. Mild mannered Albert telling his grieving younger unmarried sister that she needed “a good cry or a nice rape” astounded me. How far we have come, thank goodness.
