About this listen

Guy de Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. His narratives are characterized by an economy of style and the efficient way in which the various threads are neatly resolved.

In "The False Jewels", a man who dotes on his wife is crushed by her unexpected death and then astounded by a revelation about her costume jewelry.

Editor reviews

Guy de Maupassant was never chided for his rosy outlook on the human heart. In this audiobook presentation of his classic short story “The False Jewels”, veteran performer Cindy Hardin Killavey tells the sad tale of Monsieur Lantin, a French man of meager means, and his love for a poor country girl who has moved to Paris to find a husband. She is “a perfect type of the virtuous woman whom every sensible young man dreams of one day winning for life. Her simple beauty had the charm of angelic modesty...” But all is not what it seems and the listener is left to wonder which is better: imagined happiness or actual misery.
