About this listen

They proved their bravery fighting for His Majesty’s Secret Service and were rewarded with brides of great beauty and breeding. But one member of the Bastion Club has remained a bachelor - until now.

“Christian, I need your help. There is no one else I can turn to…L.”

When Christian Allardyce, sixth Marquess of Dearne, reads those words, his world turns upside down. Lady Letitia Randall is a woman like no other, and the day he left her behind to fight for king and country was the most difficult of his life. He never forgot the feel of her lips against his, but he never expected to see her again. Yet now she seeks his help, and Christian knows he will not resist her plea.

Letitia believes that Christian abandoned her when she needed him most, and she hates to call on his aid. But to clear her brother’s name, she has sworn to use every weapon at her command, even if it means seducing her ex-lover. Yet all the while, Christian is waging a war of his own - a campaign of pure pleasure and sweet revenge that will take them both beyond the edge of desire.

Critic reviews

“Top Pick! The Bastion Club’s latest installment features an ultrapassionate and honorable hero and a prideful heroine, along with a masterfully crafted murder mystery - loaded with red herrings - just what we expect from an author who knows the Regency’s dark corners as well as the bright lights of a ballroom. Another not-to-be-missed, can’t-put-it-down keeper.” ( Romantic Times)
“Ms. Laurens delves into the social distinctions between classes in this wickedly captivating romance. Watching her portrayal of Letitia’s famous temper as it bursts will have readers rolling in laughter.” (Fresh Fiction)

A good read

I haven't read any Stephanie Laurens for a while and this was a good book to start back with. It was like I'd never been away, It was a book to curl up in comfort and listening to with a glass of red wine. Its great to be back with a good author.

Superb and gripping story!

This is probably one of the best of the bastion club novels. The Narrator is superb at men’s voices and brings them all to life. Sadly his narration of the heroine is pretty awful and this does take a bit of getting used to (speeding it up to 1.5 helps!) fortunately you soon get caught up in the fast paced plot of murder, mystery and romance to be forgiving of the Heroines voice! It’s nearly four am and I couldn’t press stop, until the conclusion! Always a good sign of a book well worth listening to!!

Brilliant

Loved every second of it. This was my favourite of the Bastion club, because the plot and the investigation started right from the being and the heroine didn't play so hard to get, so it didn't drag on like in all the others, it was interesting from the very beginning.
The narrator was much better in this book because I put the speed up a bit faster this time. But Justin's and Tristan's voices were like women's. I mean for big strapping men they didn't sound right at all.
But the rest were good. Now on to the next one. This next one is the one I've been looking forward to the most. I hope it will as good as this one.

The heroine is spoilt and childish.

The heroine and hero knew each other over 12 years ago and promised to love each other. He goes off to play spy. She is forced into convenient marriage to save her family.
They both feel betrayed; she because he was not around to help her, he because she married. Her family, despite being diplomats etc, are known for their high emotional characters.
This is the bases of her character; she behaves as childishly as she pleases, has as many temper tantrums as she wishes. He controls her using sex. When her husband is murdered she ask him for help. Being the honorable gentleman, he agrees to help in exchange for sex.
The rest of the well know characters, suddenly become bowed to her unstable, childish character.
Though her butler is against her (so will gossip), her husband is just dead, she is in black. The hero moves into her husbands house and bed, she frequents the social rounds in full blacks. The TON acceptes this because of her family's unstable character.
She then finds out she has married a farmer's son, who has made his money through owning gaming hells. This naturally is totally unacceptable, even though, said money save her family's fortune. It needs to be hidden, as marrying a farmer's son and owning hells would have her family ostracised.
Though it was this money that saved her family.
The certainties of hero and heroine marrying was settled in the early chapters. We are subjected to the whys and why not and how each can trust the other for a number of chapters.
I find the background plot believable, however ever the rest is so ridiculous. It is abit like forcing a square peg into a round hole, just doesn't fit.
