About this listen

England, 1819. The earl of Amhurst has returned to his estate in search of a wife and, more importantly, an heir. Simon Devere isn't interested in some comely, simpering creature. A beautiful woman brings only heartbreak and ruin, and Simon's disfigured visage is proof enough of that. No, he wants a wife who is unattractive and undesirable - and the homelier, the better.

But nothing about Lady Henrietta Beauchamp is homely. She is lovely and sweet and struggles to mix with polite society when she would so much rather have plants for company. And yet Simon is her only hope for keeping Plumburn Castle in her family's possession, even if it means marrying a man she doesn't love.

It's an impossible and unlikely match unless this awkward beauty can bring hope back into a solitary beast's life.

I really enjoyed this short romance which I think was well written. I almost didn’t read it because of reviews about the narration but I’m glad I did. I had no problem with the narration and thought she did a great job.

Short and sweet romance.

Persevered through initial dislike of light apparently silly voice but realised with different characters it was accomplished! Often find the narration distracting but this turned out well

Enjoyable after getting used to narration

Story line okay. I liked the main characters and the sisters. The narration isn't the greatest but for me it wasn't so bad as the reviews suggest. Would recommend

Not bad

This is a lovely story, but the narrators voice is high pitched and uncomfortable to listen to. Shame as it takes away from the experience.

Lovely story - shrill narrator

The story unravelled a bit towards the end. There are some quaint American notions of Regency behaviour. The narration was excellent.

Not bad

The story wasn't bad as far as I listened but I couldn't stand the narrator's accent. I might physically read it if it came up on offer on Kindle.

the narrator over the top

Where does The Earl's New Bride rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Bottom quarter I have to say.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The characters are very one dimensional. I have never listened to one of Frances Fowlkes books before. Very disappointed

What didn’t you like about Alison Larkin’s performance?

Her voice is false and unpleasant to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No not at all. Found most characters quite without interest.

Any additional comments?

Very very disappointing.

Narrator dreadful

Very Poor Narrator for a very Poor Story!

It came across as very juvenile to me, hard to say if that was exacerbated by the childish voice of the narrator.

Both Story and Narrator suit each other!
