About this listen

Explore the individual lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr and their duel

Two captivating titles in one audiobook:

  • Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to One of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America
  • Aaron Burr: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Aaron Burr and the Most Famous Duel in American History

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr lived very similar lives. They were both orphaned at an early age. Both were excellent students who attended college and studied law. Both were young staff officers under General George Washington, and both became war heroes. They were both drawn to politics, and each served in the newly formed government of the United States. How was it then that these two men ended up in the most famous duel in American history?

This book would make a great book report for high school or college level U.S. history. The early days of our country's story are described so that the reader can feel himself or herself living in those days.

Good For The Students

This dual biography is extremely well-written, capturing the similarities and differences between the two men in a lively and readable way. The author does not support one man over the other, providing instead a sympathetic view of each as a complicated, intelligent and interesting individual.

Duel Biography

This brings history to life in a very entertaining way. It serves as biographies of both Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. For me, there were several surprises. One was the revelation that Aaron Burr was, on his mother's side, the grandson of evangelist Jonathan Edwards.

I Appreciate

The author's colorfully unflattering descriptions of contemporary figures and the depiction of early American politics as a bare knuckled blood sport are particularly relevant to our own tumultuous election season. Minuet paced, minutely detailed and lugging a heavy load of primary sources, this relatively short book still manages to cover a huge amount of historical real estate. A good overview for beginners and lots of good trivia for Revolutionary War buffs and students of the early Republic.

Good Book

The author does a great job of fleshing out the personal, professional, and political enmity these two men held for each other, while also making it clear that it was none of those in and of themselves that resulted in the duel directly. It is as much a biography of the two men as it is an analysis of the social requirements of the time, defending one's honor being foremost among them.
