About this listen

Lise is thin, neither good-looking nor bad-looking. One day she walks out of her office, acquires a gaudy new outfit, adopts a girlier tone of voice, and heads to the airport to fly south. On the plane, she takes a seat between two men. One is delighted with her company, the other is deeply perturbed. So begins an unnerving journey into the darker recesses of human nature.

Read by Dame Judi Dench, rediscover this shocking masterpiece in audiobook on the 100th anniversary of Muriel Spark's birth.

Fabulous novella

Couldn't put it down - beautifully narrated - and observed details would definitely recommend - I thinks I will read it many times!

Simply sublime. Beautifully read and suitably cold-hearted.Good length for a singlr listen. Bracing and gripping as a thriller.

Very good

Very good, very Muriel Spark but more depressing than most others of hers I’ve read.

Bitter honey.

Razor sharp wit of Spark nuanced perfectly by the Dame. Utterly sublime. But...oh so dark.

Massively bleak, alluring in its absurdity

Brilliant narration from Judi Dench, personally found slight background noise irritating, however not too noticeable.

8/10. Deep and Puzzling.

Spark did a fantastic job of evoking a sense of impending doom throughout, felt by both the self-fulfilling protagonist and the captivated reader. A very interesting read I must say. The Drivers Seat is my first venture into Spark and it certainly won’t be my last.

A masterpiece

This is without a doubt one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read. Muriel Spark’s masterpiece. It reminded me of Truman Capote’s ‘Miriam’.

Judi Dench Makes This Experience!

Any additional comments?

I thought the book a bit light on everything. By the time it ended, I would have helped see off the central character! I love Judi's reading!

Poor recording

One of Muriel Spark’s novellas. You know what’s going to happen very early on but the author leads one on with a number of false trails.
Recording was poor with an echo. May just have been a download glitch.
