About this listen

Fully updated throughout.

Why do most diets fail? Why does one person eat a certain meal and gain weight, while another eating the same meal loses pounds? Why, despite all the advice about what to eat, are we all still getting fatter?

The answers are much more surprising - and fascinating - than we've been led to believe. The key to health and weight loss lies not in the latest fad diet, nor even in the simple mantra of 'eat less, exercise more', but in the microbes already inside us.

Drawing on the latest science and his own pioneering research, Professor Tim Spector demystifies the common misconceptions about fat, calories, vitamins and nutrients. Only by understanding what makes our own personal microbes tick can we overcome the confusion of modern nutrition and achieve a healthy gut and a healthy body.

Good Listen

Any additional comments?

Have read a lot of books on Nutrition and I really liked this informative book that I was able to listen to without loosing concentration. I docked 1 star as (being a ceoliac), felt that the information/his opinion on people following gluten free diets a little concerning. There are sooo many undiagnosed Ceolics out there being overlooked by Doctors, but otherwise really good.

Interesting and informative but a bit rambling.

An interesting book, I enjoyed reading it and learnt a lot about my gut and diets. I did find that there are far too many chapters and it was difficult to find your way around the book.

A life time's education

I've tried all of the diets out there and had a yo-yo relationship with my bathroom scales. I know that all of the advice goes back to eating more fruit and veg but didn't really understand the true reason of why until now. It makes so much sense and will allow me to make more informed decisions when it comes to my eating choices and habits. Wish I had read/listened to this book years ago.

Very informative and easy to understand the ever-changing concept of healthy eating

Summarises almost the whole course on Nutrition and Dietetics that I am currently studying. All information is backed up with a great number of research studies.

Educational, not a diet book as such.

I find this book more of an educational insight into how our gut microbe works.

It won't give you any diet plans, but will help on how to decide how you can alter certain foods within your diet which could help you lose weight and feel much better within yourself.

For me I found parts of the book quite deep. At certain times you have to make sure it has your full attention in order to fully grasp what point the author is trying to make. Though I was listening to this in audible format whilst working.

I would recommend this book as if like me you wish to educate yourself and eat the right things then this will help.

One final point. It also challenges a lot of what we have been led to believe with regards to diets, types of food we eat. Very insightful.

More questions than answers

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - anybody interested in nutrition, diet, the anatomy of the body should definitely pick up this book - especially if you have little or no knowledge on the role microbes play in our everyday life.

What did you like best about this story?

Gildart narrates it very well, not dull, not annoying and not too monotone. As for the 'story' I mean there isn't one, this is an informative book, but none the less a book you could sit and listen to for anything between 10-60 minutes without switching off.

Have you listened to any of Gildart Jackson’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've not but I wouldn't frown if I found another book on my list that he narrates.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really, it's not a story... it's informative and educational so I'd probably struggle to retain all of the information if I listened in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

It's a very well written book and Tim Spector's certainly gained a fan for his skeptical analysis on diets and our relationship with food. I particularly liked the fact I couldn't find any points that I disagreed with, when he first mentioned cholesterol I was waiting for the trap many dieticians fall into but he pleasantly surprised me with his words on that particular subject. I find after reading it I have more questions than answers but that's probably a good thing.

Superb no frills science

Everything everyone has told you (and that includes gov't advice) is wrong.

This cuts to the chase on all aspects of diet.

I now eat a no fuss varied diet knowing that there is evidence based science behind it.
