I read The Hunger i then i bought the audiobook The Deep.
I read or listened to a few books between.
I listened to Deep a what a story! It a very subtle ghost story, but its excellent.
Based upon a true story & real life passengers (one of the nurses actually served on both the RMS Titanic & the RMS Brittanic)
& the victims are also real.
A very listenable story one which i would fully recommend.

I got to listen a while ago to the Hunger from Alma Katsu and it prepped me for what was coming in the DEEP , Alma Katsu has super interesting characters, they are not the straight forward boring Hero's from so many other books, they twist and turn and you never really know in which direction they might turn and that makes this so different and enjoyable add to this the Titanic and Britannica and you get a great story

Great premise but took ages to get going

This book left me confused and frustrated. There are some well written passages, sub stories, but the two central timelines and character of annie / lilian mystified me and I still have no idea how they ended up blended together or why. The very small genuine supernatural part in a bathroom was silly and didnt match the rest of the book, neither did the scene in the swimming pool. The character of Mark Fletcher was just unbelievable . he had no personality at all, was a gambler, unreliable and cowardly, yet all the women characters cant contain their passion for him. just no. The best character, Madeline, was dumped in a lifeboat then promptly forgotten so Why was she even in the book ? I also hated the change of tense. I loathe present tense and would not have bought the book if Id known it was written this way, but to muddle it with various types of past tense was just beyond irritating. Finally, a dreadful narrator. She has a lovely speaking voice, but voice acting, sorry ms collingwood. you are not good at this, you sound like a sunday school teacher reading bible stories to six year olds.
Save your credit people.

I really enjoyed Alma Katsu's other book The Hunger which is why I bought this book. The Deep didn't really live up to expectations for me, I found it long winded and I just struggled to feel enthusiastic about the storyline. There is also a number of characters with quite annoying accents.

For anyone who has read/listened to The Hunger by Alma Katsu, The Deep will be a real disappointment - so much so it's difficult to believe that the two novels are from the same author. The literary adeptness and creative manipulation of both horror and historical genres is really good in The Hunger, but in The Deep it misses on both scores.

This isn't helped by the narrator who, whilst good at accents and distinguishing characters from each other, appears to do so in the style of a primary school teacher reading to a class of particularly dim seven year-olds.

If you haven't read The Hunger, skip this one and buy that!

Underwhelming

I don't know why I listened to the end. I guess I thought it would get better, and I do enjoy a supernatural tale. But this was so convoluted, I just could not keep up. I wanted to slap the main character, she was so stupid! I bought this book because I listened to the author on "History Hit" and she sounded as though the book would be well written - but it was not. Sorry Alma, it was just drivel! And not that well researched when it comes to WW1 nurses - or how many were actually on the Britannic......
