About this listen

The goblins have killed all of our horses and most of our men.
They have enslaved our cities, burned our fields, and still they wage war.
Now, our daughters take up arms.

Galva - Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill - has defied her family's wishes and joined the army's untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

The road to victory is bloody, and goblins are clever and merciless. The Raven Knights can take nothing for granted - not the bonds of family, nor the wisdom of their leaders, nor their own safety against the dangerous war birds at their side.

But some hopes are worth any risk.

A fraught, shattering fantasy adventure, this standalone novel is set during the war-torn, goblin-infested years just before The Blacktongue Thief.©2024 Christopher Buehlman (P)2024 Orion Publishing Group Limited

Vocal performance

Great vocal performance, fantastic story. Immediately downloaded another of his books. A great addition to the fantasy universe.

The prose of the author and the perofrmance of the voice actress is a match made in literary heaven

One of the most entertaining audiobooks I’ve experienced

The combination of the narrative and the performance by the actress is so seamless it transports the reader almost completely. The realistic style of the telling and the complete and logical nature of the world building is unlike any other fantasy I’ve read. Highly recommend this after you’ve listened to Blacktongued thief!

A sequel to be proud of.

Yet again I am shocked at how good this writing is. The world building, the dialogue, the humour the darkness, it’s just great.

It might well be the best fantasy series I’ve read.

Like Terry Pratchett and Marlon James had a baby. With a Beak.

The narration was excellent!

Fantastic book very well read, the accent suiting the character perfectly (just like the first book in the series)

Nostalgic momoir

If you're expecting this book to be similar to the Black tongues thief it is very different!

The perspective is like a nostalgia memoir looking at Galvas time in the Daughters war. We learn alot about the soft woman underneath her hard exterior.

personally I found it difficult to get into it but I'm glad I gave it my time as it is a lovely, lovely book.

A war book with a barely any conflict

The world building is quite good. The action is pretty good. But the characters are boring and most of this book is spent walking and talking about unnecessary stuff. The goblins are an intimidating threat and the way the world’s society works is interesting and that’s what’s helped me finish it. But the main character is really dull. I’ve seen too many series of a protagonist that is righteous despite being born into wealth. She’s not badly written and I don’t dislike her but If they killed her off I wouldn’t really care about either.

I was expecting more fights given that these characters are in a war. But instead we get the protagonist constantly talking about the world and people around her and going to dinner with other people. And next thing you know there’s like a 4 hrs left. That means in 8 hours there have been 3 fight scenes. If this weren’t a war book I wouldn’t have an issue as long as the story was interesting but it wasn’t interesting and the fact that it is a war book this apparent lack of conflict is extremely annoying. A book like this should otherwise an intriguing plot with complex characters to supplement for lack of action. And if it has no intriguing plot it should have a decent amount of action to make up for lack of good characters and plot.

maturing as a writer

C Buehlman is definitely growing more capable, he really locks into a groove with this book. But theres some singing in chapter 13 which is sung with a very modern pop cadence, which breaks the immersion because the song is sung in the middle of a flipping battle, the recording is too loud, and goes on waaaay to loooooong. The song is just there for atmosphere. Needs to be no more than 12 lines. And it goes on foreverrrrrrrrr. Just. Stop. Singing.

It's such an infuriating intrusion into an otherwise great book that I had to pause and write this review

The reading was superlative. The story engaging and far far too short.

What’s not to like? Everything about Galva is perfect. It’s a worthy prequel to The Blacktounged Thief, a book I love.
