About this listen

The Darkest Day is the first audiobook in the five-part Inspector Barbarotti series from renowned Swedish crime author Håkan Nesser.

It's December in the quiet Swedish town of Kymlinge, and the Hermansson family are gathering to celebrate father Karl-Erik and eldest daughter Ebba's joint landmark birthdays. But beneath the guise of happy festivities, tensions are running high, and it's not long before the night takes a dark and unexpected turn....

Before the weekend is over, two members of the Hermansson family are missing, and it's up to Inspector Barbarotti - a detective who spends as much of his time debating the existence of God as he does solving cases - to determine exactly what has happened. And he soon discovers he'll have to unravel a whole tangle of sinister family secrets in the process....

The annoying thing about this book was the emphasis on peoples names in the early part of the book. Drove me to consider returning it. However the story and reading improved as time went on. I put it down to the writer loving the resonnance of people's names! So perservered. The end was unexpected — Christina was a beaten wife, her subservience to her controlling husband and her repression of her actions was well written.

Slow to start! Became a compelling listen

Unusual format of structuring a story, but an interesting one. Bit of a slow start, but if you stick with it a whole interesting story unfolds. Fabulous narrated! highly recommend

A very well crafted story - a thriller, detective story and exploration of very real characters and motivations. Brilliant

Gripping

More a story of the self destruction of a dysfunctional family and their mental health than a ‘detective’ novel. Very little mystery and the police inspector is largely a peripheral character with very little bearing on the happenings or eventual outcome...

Detective novel?

Really enjoyed two preceding books, both story and narration and a big fan of Scandic Noir / crime
genre.
Very rarely lose interest with a book so early, but was absolutely bored senseless with rambling narrative and monotonous narration on this occasion. Not good if you listen to audio books while driving and it did feel like a wasted credit.
Potentially fatal blow to enjoyment if this author.

Do not listen while driving!
