About this listen

In this epic dark fantasy adventure story, Shannon and Dana visit their wise old grandmother in Wales, and finally learn why their lives have been strangely tormented and cursed. There is a family secret, old as time itself, and that secret might kill them if they try to ignore their destiny. They also learn that there is a dangerous way to embrace that secret, because on that day, a harrowing creature of an alien world calls out for the few and the special, talented humans of the tenth world. Our world.

Dana performs an irreversible murderous deed that opens the gate to the Jewel of the Nine, the world of Aldheim, and they meet the strange creature calling for them. In this world they find their true calling, their special talents, the truth of the gods and also a world of mystery, danger, and adversity. Shannon and Dana struggle with their previous relationship as one grows cruel and power-driven, while the other learns to value friendship. Much is demanded of Shannon, who struggles with her loyalties.

Despite the many dangers and their apparently hopeless situation in the brutal, mage-filled world of monsters and dragons, there is hope, for Shannon has special, coveted powers of healing, reserved for the chosen of the gods. If she perseveres, she can change the past and bring back the gods.

But the price will be great.

Great narration meets great story.

Would you listen to The Dark Levy again? Why?

Yes. It builds slowly and then draws you in. I really liked the characters so I will revisit it soon. In fact I will probably revisit it soon before getting the next one and then jump straight story. I love the premise of the 10 worlds once ruled by Odin. The scope for the series is massive. Really good.

What other book might you compare The Dark Levy to, and why?

It's hard to compare. It feels really creative and is a brilliant mix of magic, mystery and legends. Like an epic fantasy style back drop.

Which character – as performed by Kristin James – was your favourite?

The narration is amazing between all of the different character. Absolutely amazing accents and a real feel for each character. If I have to pick one as a favourite I will go for Shannon.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

10 worlds to explor, but who can harness the power of a God.

A truly unique and enjoyable listening experience

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! This book is unlike anything I've read or listened to before. It's an epic dark fantasy, but set in the lore of the Norse legends. Most people will be familiar with the mainstream gods, Odin and Thor, etc, but Mr Longward delves deep.

What did you like best about this story?

It's clear that the author has done a ton of research here. There are characters from other lores, such as Greek, but they are all firmly tied to the Norse mythology. The characters are also well developed. You will care about their well being by the end of the book. I did, so much so that I've just bought book two.

What about Kristin James’s performance did you like?

Her performance blew me away. Along with the background narrator voice that carries the main story, each character has such a unique voice and accent that you know who is talking even without the dialogue tags.
Can I mention the accents again? There are characters from Russia, Wales, Austria, France, and America. The narrator captures them all. Okay, the Welsh accent sound more Irish, but I'll forgive her as she captures the emotions of the characters perfectly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I have to say that it did take me a little while to get into. The first third was mostly world building, which is no bad thing. Once past this however, I couldn't stop and had it done in two days.
