About this listen

In the floating city of Sanctaphrax, fusty old professors scheme and bicker with each other as they study the weather in minute detail - mistsifting, fogprobing, researching the air blowing in from beyond the Edge. But some experiments are best left alone...

Quint is the son of a sky pirate captain. He arrives in Sanctaphrax at the request of Linius Pallitax, the Most High Academe, who needs an apprentice he can trust to carry out a series of highly important tasks. Just how important, Quint is about to find out as he and Linius' only daughter, Maris, are plunged into the midst of a terrifying adventure that takes them deep within the rock upon which Sanctaphrax is built.

You can practically feel the Banderbear's fur and smell the Tilder sausage of Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's well-loved fantasy world as the Edge is brought to life in glorious detail in a new reading by Alex Jennings.

I have read many of the other books but never the first. Need to listen to others now.

Fantastic in every way!

This was an exciting,(sometimes frightening) story for a 9 year old. It described Quint's adventures at a rapid pace, and he didn't want to stop listening until after dark!

It could well be that I don’t remember this properly. This was a nostalgia-buy. I read these books about 20 years ago when I was 11 and loved them. And it is possible that my nostalgia is just shinier than reality but I feel like there was more in these books that made me really invest, that pulled me in. Now I feel like it just skims a story. So I’m left wondering should I stay clear of abridged books in general or just except that my 11 year brain wasn’t that deep. It’s probably great for kiddos

Abridged too far?
